What NFL player has the most career rushing yards without ever reaching 1000 yards in a single season?

I think Proehl is the receiver, as someone else already guessed.

For running backs, I'd guess Don Perkins.

Yup, Don Perkins and Ricky Proehl. Perkins played eight years with the Cowboys in the '60s, racking up at least 600 yards a season, but topping out at 945 yards in his second year. He finished with 6217 yards.

Proehl's played 17 years, never reaching even 900 yards, but remaining remarkably consistent except for when the Seahawks thought he was through ten years ago. He's wound up with 8848 yards for his career.
