Fight Manager

One aspect of this whole thing that was always fun for me was making matches. Deciding who fought who.

Out of all the hundreds of fighters, there are always two or three (or more)who fire your imagination for whatever reason. Sam Langford was one. Tommy Burns another. Sailor Tom Sharkey. I'd get a real kick out of looking over possible opponents, weighing their pros and cons in relation to my chosen lads. Perusing their records for some glimmer of information. Checking their standing in the rankings.

I still do this now, but something's missing. As this is a wish list, here goes. When I click on the "Open Fighter Record" button anywhere, I want to immediately go to a screen that has the fighter's name, his photo, his height and weight, nationality, and his ranking and ring record. It would be like a typewritten scout's report after visiting the enemy camp. I can't see how this would be very difficult to programme, especially considering what a whiz-bang job the game designers have done with the rest of TBCB2. I can picture the scout now, bent over his trusty Underwood, a nickel stogie clamped in his teeth and a battered fedora tilted back on his head as he tries to sum up his thoughts on that young bang-ger from the mid-west.

OOTP has a feature similar to this which is separate from the Stats. It would be cool to see it implemented in TBCB I must admit.

Amazingly I share your affinity for all three of the Pugs you mentioned. I also have always taken a special interest in Joe Choynski, Young Stribling and Joe Jeanette.....something that just draws you to certain Fighters I guess. I even went so far to start gathering information for a possible book on Choynski, even coming up with a working Title. The idea is shelved for now as despite the massive respect he got from his peers, there is just not a wealth of information out there for Chrysanthemum Joe, at least that I have yet uncovered.

bumped for highlighted part.

Anyone know of a candidate for the graphics artist job for TBCB that Jim Trunzo mentioned? We'll never get improvements without one, and something has to be done to enhance the static graphics if you're going to attract new gamers and good reviews. If one of the first screens that a reviewer sees is that gadawful Fighters List, they're going to think they're looking at a slightly updated version of Title Fight 1999. I'm not an artist, but how about inserting boxing props like tin buckets, wooden stools, towels, water bottles, headgear, gloves, robes and shoes, rope, etc. Reduce the pieces of information across the screen to allow space for artwork that tells visitors they are in a boxing sim.

I directed an old friend of mine to that thread where Mr. Trunzo asked for a full time graphic design artist. I'm not sure if he'll do it, but I know he's been itching to get into gaming art for a long time.

Great, senor Mentis! Have him read my suggestions before he contacts Jim Trunzo.

Bumpity bump. Some good ideas here. Have they hired a full-time game artist yet?

I think these features would be nice.

1) The ability to print off individual fighters game records.

2) The ability to clear the stats for only one fighter and start over.

3) A Super-Heavyweight division for fighters like Lewis, Kilitchko's, etc or
if their CF changed automatically if there is a 4-5 inch difference in HT.

4) The ability to keep up with career earnings.

Starting Over (Plus One More Suggestion)

Mike, I'm fairly certain you can do #2 in the game already (starting over by clicking the "reset stats" function on the fighter screen -- but the other three would be nice additions, agreed.

I for one would like to see a kind of matchmakers or promoters assistant that would make scheduling bouts easier on a regular basis -- where the game, through input from the user, would take over some of the functions that many of the guys using the game now do with complicated spreadsheets, etc., or random die rolling, which fighters are available to fight each month, who fights who, where they are fighting and where they appear on the card, etc.

Agreed, but I'd like to see some or all of these with a toggle on/off option for those who want to continue being the promoter.

Here's one possible path for the RP version:

In an RP version where you select certain fighters to control and the game controls the rest, you'd start off the matchmaking process with one fighter of yours in mind. This guy would be on the screen in front of you, a tab in your stable of fighters. You examine his record and style, and check his ratings screen. Now you want to select an opponent. You go to your chief scout and peruse reports. Say your guy is a Canuck, but you're looking for potential American opponents. You set scouting to only show American heavyweights with less than 5 bouts. You go down the list, checking records until you find a guy who is 2-3-1. You bring him up on the individual fighter screen to see what he looks like, what his history is, etc. You do the same with two or three others. Then you approach the promoter/matchmaker (in a particular city) and propose he set up a fight with your boy and one of the suggested opponents. After a minute, he informs you that three of the four rejected your offer. Now he suggests a 5th possible opponent with a better record. The risk is greater but the purse is larger. You have to decide whether to take the opponent you hand-picked or the one the promoter suggested. You check this other guy out and see he could be dangerous; he's 3-1-1 with three KOs. If you pick the first guy, the bout will be part of a smoker at the local armoury. If you pick the second, tougher opponent, the fight will be part of a card at the main arena of whatever city the promoter is in.

You decide to play it safe and choose the first guy. When you sign on the dotted line, the next screen brings you to the armoury card. It's a 4-bout card with the best guy maybe ranked 50th in the world. Only 500 people show up, leaving another 300 seats empty. No TV or film, not even radio to cover the card. The gate is smaller than expected. Your guy's purse is cut in half, because you had to accept a deal based on how much was taken in at the ticket window. The other three bouts were set by the promoter (game).

By the way, your guy wins, but gets cut and requires stitches. He'll be unable to fight again for several weeks. However, the promoter liked what he saw and offers you another opponent on a bigger card when your boy is ready.

In another scenario, the headliner on the card fails to show up and the whole thing is cancelled. You have to start all over again.
