Joe Louis and Jack Dempsey

Came across a photo showing Joe Louis striding confidently back to his corner after crushing Clarence "Red Burman" in the 5th round at MSG in 1941. Took me a second to realize it was Louis because of the look on his face. Chin in the air, he had the look of someone who had just proven a point to someone. Reading the caption I discovered that Burman was Jack Dempsey's protege and I wondered if Dempsey was in Burman's corner. Certainly he must have been ringside. It must have irked Dempsey that Louis made so many successful defences of the title that once had been his. Was that part of what really drove him to find a heavyweight contender? Something to ponder.

Cap, I don't know where I found it, but about 30 years ago, I ordered a GREAT, GREAT black + white comic book on the careers of both Joe Lous and Jack Dempsey. I forgot who the artist was, but id you were reading Joe Lousi's history, if you flipped the book around, it was Jack Dempsey's history. They weren't photographs, but the drawings really captured the feeling of each opponent's dilemma, in the drawings, perhaps better than a real photo would. You could tell that most of these drawings were based on actual fight photos. The cartoon Porky Flynn looked like the real Porky Flynn. The cartoon Arthur Pelky looked like the real one.
I so wish I still had this item, but it was ancient(late forties, I believe), and very yellow. Each time you turned a page, flakes of the page would fall off.
