If only one team advances from a group, you can have a head-to-head tie at 2-1.
If two teams advance from a group, you can't have a two-way tie to go to a tiebreaker for a tie by second and third place. If the United States loses to South Africa, boy, that'll go down in infamy here in the States. I'll blame A-Rod. |

You're forgetting that games can end in a tie.
So as long as each team ties at least once, a head-to-head tiebreak can be applied for 2nd & 3rd. If that was to happen, you could have the following standings: 2-0-1 1-1-1 1-1-1 0-2-1 And then as long as the two teams at 1-1-1 didn't play each other in one of the two tied games, the winner of the game between them would be placed higher. And of course if two teams finish at 2-1 and two at 1-2, then the group positioning would also be determined by head-to-head. |

They do extra innings, but only to 14. After that it is a tie. |

I thought Bud Selig's history with tie games would have made him hesitant to allow them in the WBC. Maybe, instead of extra innings, they could break ties with a homerun contest, or a team race around the bases.

Or they could just decide the extra innings using MVP 2005.

Panama is facing a mercy rule loss against the Netherlands right now. Well, it's 7-0 in the 5th for the Orange.
edit...mlb's "in progress" board is soooo sweet: http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/y2006...nt_1&brand=wbc Last edited by boilermaker; 03-10-2006 at 02:40 PM. |

Holy smokes, not only is Holland shutting out Panama, it's currently a no-hitter in the 5th....and not only is it a no-hitter, but there's only been one baserunner. One walk shy of a perfect game.

If you scroll your mouse over the pitcher, it gives his pitch count, plus a strike/ball ratio....same with baserunners, fielders, etc.

Uh, 10-0, top of the 5th.....we're five runs away from mercy rule and there's no indication that Panama will ever get out of this half inning.
Panama's SS Miller has three errors in this game. I remember he dropped a pop up against Puerto Rico. His dream of the Majors is over! ![]() edti...it's 16 hits to 0. |

2 outs away in Panama-Netherlands from a 6-inning no -hitter.
Panama needs a run to avoid mercy rule. Whoops, it's Netherlands batting top 7th?

Does a game have to go at least 7 innings before mercy gets called? Maybe, I don't know.

Okay, well we're 3 outs away from a 7-inning mercy rule no-hitter.
