Javon Walker: "...no interest in being in Green Bay..."

"Why should I risk another year of getting beat up playing for a team that I don't want to play for? That's stupid," Walker said.

"I love the game," Walker said. "But I'm not going to risk what I went through this year, tearing an ACL and taking pain pills. If I'm going to go out and take hits, it's going to be for a team that I love playing for."
Hmmm.

Wide receivers in the NFL: is anything better?

He sounds really smart. I can sympathize with him - who wants to play for a team that has tradition and such great fans as Green Bay?

And what's with the reasoning about his injury? It's okay to tear your ACL, as long as you do it for a team you love? I wouldn't want this guy on my team, because who knows what he'll be saying about his next time a year or two down the road.

Whoa! It's as if he's just like 1/2 the American workforce and doesn't mind his job but hates the company he works for (the other half just hates their job). Nobody would ever be like that! How unreasonable!

I hate my job but love my company! How's that for screwing up the stats!

Oh yeah, and everyone should hate Javon Walker because he went to FSU. Duh. But also, why would he want to play in Green Bay? Some city in Wisconsin? Oh yeah, sign me up. That's way better than Miami or San Diego or someplace warm like that, or LA or NY that have better media coverage, or Atlanta, which is the best team on the face of the planet ever in the history of forever, despite what the win-loss record says and no I'm not just a total fanboy homer.

I get your point, but you know what you're signing up for when you decide to play in the NFL. He's welcome to do what he wants when the time comes for his free agency, but until then he needs to honor his contract, just like the Packers need to honor their part of it.

If he wants to retire, that's great. I'm sure he'll be much happier punching a clock than he would having to play pro football for millions in Green Bay. I'm sure making $50K in Miami or Dallas is far preferable than millions in a cold city, because at least you're warm.

FWIW, I'd be ecstatic to have Javon Walker playing in Miami for $50K.

Oh, the old "he make lots of money so he's not allowed to whine" argument. Always a good one.

No, it's more that I believe he has a contractual obligation to fulfill, and it would be easier for everyone wihout distraction. And while I don't like the whining, he has every right to do it, as does anyone.

Looks like this is just one where we disagree. I can't say your argument is wrong, just that I feel differently.

He's just angry because the team won't renegotiate his contract.

Half the country isn't writing letters to their editors; they just go to work and do their jobs.

The press also isn't asking them about it.

Well, my argument was nothing more than "rich people are also allowed to be unhappy at their jobs". It just seemed to me, from your first and second posts, that you were saying he's not. But if you'll allow that even rich folk don't like who they work for, it's all cool.

They definitely don't have to like their bosses, and I'm sure many don't. I think we just hear about the stars who feel that way because the "lesser" guys are afraid to complain too much. I know that, if I was an average or below-average guy in the NFL, I'd be scared to speak up because of the threat of being cut loose in a league without guaranteed contracts.

If I sounded harsh in those first posts, it's probably because I'm tired of hearing these things. I guess the media just seizes on them and tries to blow them up into a big story.
