I noticed in the Comments and Feedback thread that some people would like to see foul balls removed from OOTP5. I just wanted to run a poll to see what others thought. Here is the link to the original thread:

We should remove foul balls from real games too!!
Maybe OOTP5 should do what real baseball should do and institute limits on pitching changes in an inning, pickoff throws in an inning, and the granting of timeouts inbetween every pitch. ![]() Jason

Keep the foul balls in. Its absurd that someone would even want this out. DONT you normally see foul balls in real life MLB ???
It adds to the drama of the play-by-play. With a 3 and 2 count, 2 outs, bottom of the ninth.... your best hitter up against the best closer in the league, its nice to see him foul off a pitch or two. |

I'm gonna go against the trend here... in the 9th, 3-2.. ya, that's dramatic.
But with no one on, no one out in a middle inning and a player fouling off pitch after pitch after pitch it just gets mind-numbing and tedious to press "1" over and over to see the same result. |

Well the poll doesn't really get to what most people dislike about foul balls. Its not the foul ball per say its that you have to constantly re-click all your defensive alignments and such.
I think some people may also see similar 'bad luck' that I have with this, I frequently see many 10+ pitch at-bats and it seems for me fouls always come in bunches. I very rarely see a foul ball and then the next line of the pbp is the ball being hit in play. I have no problem with the fouls one way or another, but I know a couple of times while watching a WS game or All-star game I would of became annoyed if I had to constantly set all my defensive alignments. I remember one occurance where a 1-2-3 inning took a pitcher 42 pitches to retire the side during the 5th inning of an anti-climatic game. |

How about adding another strategy button that is for "same as last pitch" or something similar?

Keep them. It's much more realistic when there are foul balls.

I agree with the people who would like to keep them but have a "same as last pitch" option.

Yes... but...
Foul balls would be okay if the game didnt seem to get on a foul ball kick. Its one of those things that when it rains it pours.
When I see one foul ball I can expect to see 3-7 more for the same batter. I wouldnt mind 1 or 2 but it should be capped. I dont buy the reason that they should be kept in because its realistic. If that was the primary reason to put them in then we should have the game go pitch-by-pitch instead of 1 button to complete. Eclzeastes |

Weird. Foul balls seem like such a good "realistic" part of the game I thought they enhanced the gameplay. Strange to see that they rub some people the wrong way so badly.
They actually impact my love of OOTP positively. Particularly the "dramatic moments" getting drawn out. In fact, some of my best OOTP moments involve scrappy players repeatedly fighting off pitches until they're able to drive one for a hit or completely whiff with a man on third edging home... Keep 'em in!

I think we're missing the major point. Foul balls "have" to remain because they directly effect pitch count. In any given game, there is probably 10-12 foul balls which directly effect the pitchers duration. Worst thing for a pitcher is to get someone up there fouling off pitch after pitch as his arm gets more and more tired....
I'm all for leaving them as is. Henry |

How about keeping the foulballs, but maybe cutting the frequency down some, i just finished a game that had 57 foul balls. Now this is probably an extreme amount, and it may even be realistic, but its not fun, its time consuming, and its very annoying.

I like the idea of just including them in the pbp. Just tell us that a guy fouls the next pitch off, then proceed with the pbp until he doesn't.

Last night in one of my games, Mark Pryor had someone (I think it may have been Timo Perez) down 0-2 with two outs and no one on in a game the Cubs were winning 7-0 in the top of the 5th, so not an important at bat. Timo wound up making Pryor throw 14 pitches to him before he hit a 3-2 pitch in the air to left to end the inning. Personally, I like those one-on-one battles, and it also forced me start to think about Pryor's pitch count.
Also, on a personal note, these one-on-one struggles remind me of what was probably my greatest at bat as a little leaguer: I was down 0-2 and fouled off - no lie - 16 straight pitches before getting a base hit. I made that kid throw nineteen pitches to me - a lot for an inning, let alone an at bat and every one of them a strike. Sad that my baseball career pretty much peaked at age 15, but what the hell. At least it was a state tournament game...

Unless someone can prove that the number of foul balls is severely out of whack, they need to remain in the game.
However, there should also be an interface option of "Same as last pitch" or pre-game, "Let the batter foul off all the pitches he wants, I don't want to change my defensive strategy" and thereby reduce the number of mouse-clicks. |

Why not make the foul balls a part of one pbp run? e.g. "After fouling off 4 pitches, Joe Blow connnects/whiffs, etc." This way the foul balls stay in, but don't affect game time.
Personally, I don't mind having to reselect options as foul balls are hit. I usually enjoy the added suspense. Maybe it could be an in-game option of the current way foul balls appear in pbp or the way I suggested. |
