That Schuerholz statement is hysterical. We're supposed to feel bad for them, after the run on top that they've had? The only economic problem they have is that they've bored their fans with too much success.

Aren't they almost as rich as the Mets anyway? - so really what he's saying is that it sucks to have so many good players that you have to trade some away rather than pay them. I guess he would prefer player slavery.

The idea that the Braves have more money than they can spend is a popular misconception. They've had to slash their scouting, office, and general backroom/clubhouse staff over the last 2 years due to the financial problems that AOL Time Warner is having. Since the parent corporation's money problems seem to only be growing, the budget will get tighter for the Braves and the other sports teams under their umbrella. I suspect it won't be long before the Braves become another also-ran that never wins another pennant. At least it won't surprise me when it does happen.

Already the Hawks never amount to anything, and the Thrashers are working on their third last place finish in their fourth overall season. The Braves may very well regain their form of the mid-to-late 1980s.

I like the trade personally. Oh wait a minute I'm a Phillies fan. Salivating over making 2003 rosters for OOTP5 and how good the Phillies are going to be, might be 100 win team in OOTP . Maybe even 110.

That sounds more like the general economy than the economics of baseball. AOL Time Warner's problems affect the Braves, but over the past decade when the company's done well, they've had the money to go out and get the guys they needed (whether or not they got the right guys all the time is also a different issue). So for Schuerholz to make the comment that he did is a reflection of a new perspective that he hasn't had in the past, but they've still got a lot more money than most other teams.

Are you for real? AOL Time Warner has only owned the Braves since that merger. The Braves were not bothered by the corporate cats in Time Warner proper. Turner Sports was still allowed to basically run itself as it always had prior to Turner selling it all into Time Warner. Only since the merger with AOL has the corporate attitude been thrown into Turner Sports, starting when they removed McGuirk from his long term position at the helm of Turner Sports.

What disapoints me, and probably the fans of many other teams, is that the Red Sox couldn't come up with something better for Milwood. Seriously, the Braves needed a 1B, why not sign Daubach and deal him there? He'd be cheap for them. Now they're going to be stuck with taking Tatis and Colon from Montreal while dealing Hillenbrand, Sanchez, and Fossum.

Potential Lineup 2003 (everybody with a * came up through the braves´ system):

1. Rafael Furcal SS *
2. Marcus Giles 2B *
3. Chipper Jones LF *
4. Gary Sheffield RF
5. Andruw Jones CF *
6. Mark DeRosa 3B *
7. Javy Lopez C *
8. ?????????? 1B

The Braves USE their money. They don´t throw it arround. Schuerholz is human. Even he makes mistakes. But the good moves outweigh the bad moves!
They don´t use the money to "get the guys they need". They use the money to KEEP the guys they need. Or they trade their talent to get the guys they need. If this off-season´s strategy will backfire, has to be seen. I´m still confident the Braves will win the East.

Everybody was talking about the Mets last Off-Season. Where did THEY finish? Now erverybody´s talking ´bout the Phillies. The Braves are the team to beat!

I am not sure if anyone else heard this or not but someone in the Braves system was complaining about the salaries and the fact that the current Braves payroll is so high that they could no longer afford Milwood's contract.

That REALLY made me laugh... It was said here in Canada on the Team radio network and the guys who do the show had material for a week!!!

Hmm, let's see...

Braves sign Maddux to $15 million contract.

Braves find themselves $15 million over budget.

This one doesn't take a genius.

Hey, let's trade away our future to sign a 37-year-old pitcher for one more year!
