17 Runs in 1st inning

This is the type of ballgame I would like to attend:

http://www.larryhosting.com/1975/box210.html

17 runs before the 1st out.... PBP is also there...

(I think that's a 17-run first inning)

A 17-inning first inning would have been more intriguing.

Someone wanna explain how Slayback has an ERA of 0.00? I'm guessing it must have been his first work of the season.

I guess the game puts zero's in for infinity. I like that there were at least 14 hits and 2 walks before an out was recorded. 16 straight batters (minimum) reached base before an out was recorded. I can't find the play-by-play to see iof there were any more but has got to be a record.

The game does use zeroes for infinite. So I guess that was his first appearance on the year. His ERA toward the end of the year was at 5.00 when I checked this morning.

Pfft. Jim Rice was only 1 for 7! That's why he's not in the HOF!

Yes, if you do not get an out then your innings pitch would be 0 and would create a 0 era. Kinda stupid but that is how the formula works (9*er)/innings pitched.

This game would have been better if New York(A) was the winner

Actually, no. You can't divide something by 0.

Correct. But the game apparently does not come supplied with the symbol for infinity, so when faced with this error of arithmetic, it displays zero until an out is recorded by the pitcher.

I always wondered about that. Is there someone that discovered that? Some famous math genius that said, 'I am working to see if you can divide by zero'. He got grants and stuff and stared at the ceiling, figuring it out.

OK, I have an apple. I divided in 2, I get 1/2 an apple. OK, I have another apple, I divide into zero pieces. Hmmm... is this possible? Yes, no, wait, uh, I need another grant. No, wait, zero pieces, so it would be zero. Let me check this. Give me that calculator. Hmmm, it errors. OK, give me that abacus. Wait, never mind, I don't know how to use that thing.

An interesting story and is true, as far as I have been told. When the Romans invented the Roman Numeral system, I, II IX, etc., they screwed up. They forgot one little thing. There was a small flaw, but there was also a MAJOR flaw. The small flaw was that they had to keep making up signs for higher numbers, i.e. I, X, C, M, etc...

Can anyone guess what the major flaw for the system is?

It's simple. If there are no pieces of bubble gum and you divide them between you and me, how many pieces to we each have? Zero.

But if there are five pieces of bubble gum and you divide them by nobody, then how many pieces does each person have? It's a non-question because if there are no people, how can anybody have anything?

Division is assigning an equal number of something to the number of parties that exist. If no parties exist, you just can't divide whatever you have.

You can't divide something by nothing.

By the context of the conversation, I'm going to guess that it's that they didn't create a numeral zero. But really I have no idea.
