No, but I did have to stand in the front of the classroom for a minute or so while my teacher applauded my boldness of betting on the Dolphins against the Ravens while the people in the class sat and giggled.

That rather pales in comparison to this incident.

Personally, my favorite teachers were the ones who gave enough of a damn to pick on me when I walked in wearing my Zach Thomas jersey. I had teachers throw crumpled pieces of paper at me before. I've even had them write little comments about that kind of stuff on test papers. Why should that make me whimper and complain? I liked it. It made me feel like they actually cared about me on a personal level.

I took GOOD NATURED RAZZING from teachers and my peers. You know, "what is with the Cards hat? You have terrible taste! We'll meet you out back after class! Looks like Nate automatically fails this quiz/test"...etc.etc.etc. It was razzing, a lot of razzing. No TEACHER ever made me sit on the floor during a mid-term exam, called me a "stinking" anything and then had students throw paper at me.

...and then passed it off as a "lesson"

Can't rape a woman for wearing a short skit.
Can't harass a student wearing a DEN shirt in the PA School system.

By the way, I'd be really upset too if someone called me a "stinking" something. Because I am, after all, six years old.

Yeah, your comments in this thread do give off that impression. Don't you have an animal to go torture?

This is a bit of a stretch in the ol analogy department.

I got students who are Yankees fans. I'll rib them about certain things and let them rib me back. But there's no way I'd ever encourage other students to throw **** at them or make them sit seperate during a big test (that I'm sure counts for a lot on the grade) and taunt them while they're supposed to be taking a test.

There's a huge difference betweeen playful joking and making someone a scapegoat. Just like there's a huge difference between advocating a sports team by wearing their jersey and advocating a racist lifestyle by wearing a KKK outfit.

It is, but a person should not be subjected to harassment for the way they are dressed. If you want to dress a certain way even if you're a super poser, fine, nobody should be allowed to harrass you (especially physically).

Oh, and I never condoned the disruption during the test. I do stand by my statement that the kid is a sissy Broncos fan.

Those statements I can live with. Although I still think you have to acknowledge differences in degree (such as the KKK example).

Lighten up, kid. Wipe the dookie from your panties and have some fun with the situation. You're not the only one who's experienced a little sports-related teasing from a teacher and some classmates
You don't seem to have an issue with it either.

Were this just a general example in discrimination ("Let's use this Broncos fan here as an example of what it feels like to be ostracised for not falling within the norm") I wouldn't have a problem. To do it at a midterm, which would undoubtedly affect his performance, his grade in the class and his chances of getting accepted to particular colleges is completely inexusable.

So if it's acceptable for a teacher to mock a kid for wearing a rival team's jersey, then it's acceptable for the kid to turn around and yell "**** you!", right?

I would also imagine that being mocked, forced to sit on the floor, and pelted with crumpled paper might negatively affect the student's score on his midterm exam, which is on the teacher.

Furthermore, is it an ethnicity class or sensitivity training? Giving a student first-hand knowledge of how it feels to be discriminated against is probably not part of the curriculum.
