What I ask myself is why focus on one creator when you can have many? I mean, it's a group... if you want one creator, go buy solo records. Let's take The Beatles for example. You can't focus on one person, it just happens that this band features 3 of the best songwriters ever to have lived. A band is a group effort, and that's why I think that the Atom Heart Mother / Meddle period was so creative.

I hold nothing against Roger Waters (pre-1977). Nothing. In fact, my 2 favorite Floyd songs were written by Waters (Brain Damage, Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun). His lyrics (especially on Dark Side) are really great... but as much as I like him before 1977, as much as I hate him after. He was an egoistic control freak, and the musioc wasn't all that good in my opinion. Of course it wasn't much better after Waters left (endless guitar solos

), but at least my friend Gilmour wasn't a bad person like Mr. Waters.

I'm no Pink Floyd expert, but I have the Division Bell (their last CD, I think) and I think it's terrible. I could tolerate some of their older stuff (like Dark Side of the Moon), but couldn't stand Division Bell.

I don't really like The Division Bell neither. There isn't a consensus amongst Pink Floy fans (see "Stereolab?" thread) as to which CD is the best, some think The Wall is the best album ever while some consider it a poor Floyd effort (like myself), but if you want to hear the real Pink Floyd don't take anything they released after The Wall.

The Wall was a great concept, and a cool movie, but Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here were both better albums, and possibly Meddle, depending on your mood.

Almost every Floyd fan I've met has hated me or thought I was a lunatic because I like songs from all three eras, instead of picking one era and fervently defending it. The Barrett era -- enough can't be said about "See Emily Play" and "Astronomy Domine." The Waters era... well, that speaks for itself, and is definitely the best of the three. And yes, the Gilmour era had a few gems too, with "Learning to Fly" being the standout (on an otherwise crappy album), but "High Hopes" and "Keep Talking" aren't too bad either, and "Marooned" is a nice little short instrumental with "Grammy-Winning" attached to its name (although, yes, the rest of The Division Bell is rather worthless).

I'm sure you all can tell how much I loved the best-of album, Echoes.

I would separate the Pink Floyd history in 4 eras rather than 3. There would be:

1) Syd Barrett period (everything before A Saucerful of Secrets)
2) "Band" period (A Saucerful of Secrets - Wish You Were Here)
3) Roger Waters period (Animals - The Final Cut)
4) David Gimour period (A Momentary Lapse of Reason to present)

The reason I add the #2 period is because yes, Roger Waters was the band leader, but the music was still largely influenced by all 4 members of the band. Take PF at Pompeii, for example, yI think you see Mason more than all of the other members combined. Personally, that's the period I prefer, followed by the Syd period. I'm not a big fan of the 2 following periods.

My Floyd albums hierarchy is the following: (STs not included)

1) Ummagumma (Live)
2) Meddle
3) Dark Side of the Moon
4) Atom Heart Mother
5) Wish You Were Here
6) A Saucerful of Secrets
7) Piper at the Gates of Dawn
8) Ummagumma (Studio)
9) Animals
10) The Wall
