NHL: Palffy retires

Penguins' RW Ziggy Palffy retires in the middle of the season, apparently due to a lingering injury. Whole story here; what is surprising is that despite being on a bad team and having injury woes, he still had 42 points (11+31) in 42 games this season.

I wouldnt be surprised if the losing helped him make this decision. I also wouldnt be shocked to see him come back in a year or two.

Even with the bright future of Crosby, could the landscape be any more miserable in Pittsburgh?

In terms of staying in Pittsburgh in the coming years, yes, the landscape is miserable. In terms of great young talent (Crosby, Fleury, Malkin, etc), hell no.

Palffy just has not been scoring for the Pens. He has good stats but most of them came early on in the season. With him retiring the Pens should be able to save enough money to keep Fleury up all season which if they would of sent him down would of been a horrible PR move.

Pitt made the mistake of doing what the rangers had been doing for the past seven years. Signing older expensive players without regard to role players and chemistry.

Yup, I'm sure he would have gone on "suffering" for a few more months on a Cup contender. As for the comeback, if a year of rest helps heal his shoulder, why not; however, if it's as shot as, say, Esa Tikkanen's knees, then probably not.
