Speeding up system
I just bought a Dell notebook computer (1.5 Celeron processor, 256 MB RAM, 30 GB hard drive) but it seems to run OOTP4 slower than my 700 mhz desktop w/ 192 MB RAM.
I'm also running Windows XP, and was hoping someone could "guide" me through the msconfig program -- what programs are safe to turn off, etc. Any advice would be appreciated. |

With XP, msconfig will only help with a little of it.
Head to http://www.blackviper.com/ and check his section on XP there. XP starts with a HELL of a lot of pointless services running, and he has a guide as to what they do, whether you're safe to turn them off etc... I went through it on my 2ghz system and it made a HELL of a difference, and I only went with the "safe" option for the majority of them, not the more harsh "gamers" option. For the record, NOTHING I turned off has made any difference to my system. msconfig will only help with programs, not actual services that fire up when you start XP. There could also be power management stuff screwing with the system. I know some laptops have built in stuff to slow the processor down to conserve battery power. It can usually be overridden in the BIOS (or possibly even within Windows itself. My laptop is 9 years old.) But bear in mind if you DO change this, your system will eat batteries faster (assuming that's even the problem). There's a million and one reasons that the performance is crap. Hope some of this helps. |

MSConfig could help with boot up times, but the services is what you want to get into check. As stated above, there are alot that run in the background that are needless to the normal person. Turning some of these off should definitly speed the system a bit

You might also want to check out hhtp://www.tweakxp.com. I just did a few of the tweaks from their site and, even though my system is already pretty streamlined, it's made it a bit slicker still.

i second the blackviper link, its a great guide to cutting down uneeded services. even though this guy is a total tool. there are SO many services you can disable. I have 7 running, i think the base XP install is 25+ services up and going at all times. You save about 40mbs of ram disabling the uneeded ones.
