Well, my father is typically doing something, it just isn't calling the plays. He'll be talking to a linebacker finding out what he is seeing out on the field. Is the tackle blocking on or down on a certain play...is the tight end taking a wider split when they pass like we noticed on film, etc.

Good God, I've double disgraced myself in this thread. I defended Penn State, AND totally got beat to the Tom Landry reference.

Okay, besides Bear, who has been a better coach than JoePa in the college game?

If you say Bobby Bowden, you're in for a slam of stats.

Yea, so does my dad, so I guess that throws my argument completely out the window.

ok, this is getting hopeless. you guys have it carved in your mind that because paterno used to be a great coach means that he is good. and upon further inspection, new england doesn't even have an offensive coordinator this year, bellicheck and the quarterbacks coach call the plays.

also, on one last note, you guys have failed to provide one shred of evidence that Paterno actually does something besides watch the game with his blurred vision and jabber at refs. at least on the field, his assistants do everything and paterno looks goofy and wanders around. i'm done with this, believe what you want.

Well, I meant not doing anything in the "not doing anything particularly relevant at the moment". He usually chatted up the linebackers and at least paid attention to what was going on. But he didn't call plays or even make suggestions.

Who gets the final say with NE's play-calling? Belichick or the QB Coach?

Last night, after the freshman kicker (Kelly) missed the second kick, guess who I saw giving him personal attention and some obvious words of encouragement. You'd never believe it! It was Joe Paterno!!!!

Have you ever been to a Penn St. practice? Do you have any idea what goes on in the Penn St. locker room or meeting rooms? You have no proof that Paterno doesn't do anything, which is the ludicrous argument because Paterno is the HEAD FREAKING COACH.

Hah. Paterno just locked up a #2 or #3 place finish THIS SEASON. He's won hundreds of games with a very good winning percentage. All of his players are highly complimentary. He's never been accused of running a dirty program.

And the burden of proof is on US to show that he does something? Are you serious?

College football exists outside of the 3 hours a night you watch on TV, of which maybe 5 aggreggate minutes are focused directly on what the head coach is doing.

Was the camera on Paterno the entire freakin' game? Or, are there amazing mind-powers at play here?

Now you are comparing being a head football coach to being the President of the United States??? How do you get any parallel there whatsoever?

What do you define as coaching?

As well as during the practices and coaches meetings? The locker room? Is dbacks933 getting some feed during his games that the rest of us don't?

I think this proves your ignorance. To paraphrase some Chinese guy who never did anything important, great football teams win before they ever step on the field.
