Again, I'll take the defensive stand assuming your "give a kid an interview" statement was tossed in this direction.

I never said anything about him being a bad coach. And perhaps my wording should have been better when I said he was a prick. He was a prick to me. Is that sufficient?

you guys are missing my main point, if you get the oppurtunity to watch a replay of the orange bowl, just watch paterno. they show him A LOT and he never does ANYTHING even resembling coaching, unless he's getting paid to look senile and yell at refs like they were the local hooligans that just stole his newspaper.

I think you are missing the point of what a head coach does. You are going to be hard pressed to find many head coaches any more that call any type of plays. Offenses and Defenses are just too complicated these days which is why the Coordinators are assigned to the play calling most of the time. The Head Coach will have meetings with the Coordinators and make the ultimate decision on what direction or system to use, but the coordinator implements it. On game day, the only direct decision a Head Coach will typically make is whether to punt, kick a field goal, go for it on 4th, etc. He can easily make these decisions without the use of a head set. There are plenty of other guys on the sidelines that can communicate his decision to whoever is on the other end of the headset upstairs. Add to all this the fact that there is approximately a month of preparation time for bowl games instead of one week and I doubt there was much need for him to communicate with the coordinators...they had probably already game planned for every conceivable situation.

Um, I do. My guess would be that less than 10% of those coaches are calling plays. It may be possible that they are discussing plays, or plays that they think may work later. However, the offensive coordinator is the only one talking into the QB's helmet, he is making the specific play call. Sure, there are a few that are handling the play-calling themselves, but those coaches are then barely involved in other parts of what is going on. Martz in St. Louis was a perfect example of this, he was devoted to calling the plays and had little or nothing to do with what was going on on Defense & Special Teams.

Belichick, in my observation, does the exact same thing as Paterno during an actual game except that he wears a headset and a goofy looking hoodie while he does it.
