Jeff Reardon, armed robber

http://www.kare11.com/news/news_arti...storyid=114750

Quote:
Former Minnesota Twins pitcher Jeff Reardon was arrested in Florida Monday on suspicion of committing armed robbery.

According to a news release from the Palm Beach Gardens Police Department, the 50-year-old former All Star entered a Hamilton Jewelers store in shopping mall and handed a clerk a note demanding money. The clerk, believing Reardon had a gun, filled a bag with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Reardon fled the store with the cash and was followed by the store manager. Police arrived and arrested Reardon without incident outside a P.F. Chang's restaurant. The money was recovered at the same time.

OK Kare 11. You are a Minnesota station. You shouldn't have this in the article:

Not guilty until convicted. There are a number of bearded men that look just like Reardon.

Probably a mistaken identity.

Can you seriously pick him out of a lineup with these other suspects?

Jeff Reardon

If he is convicted, we'll start calling him Jeff Reardum.

It could be an issue of depression and medication. He recently had a son die of a drug overdose. The story is here:

http://www.boston.com/sports/basebal...p1=MEWell_Pos3

Edit for appropriate quote:

Quote:
"He said it was the medication that made him do it and that he was sorry," O'Neill said.

He said Reardon has lived in the city for more than 20 years and has never caused any problems.

Reardon briefly appeared in court Tuesday and was to be released on $5,000 bail, said his attorney, Mitchell Beers.

He said Reardon had a 20-year-old son who died of a drug overdose in February 2004, which has been "very difficult for him and his family," and has been on medication for depression. Reardon, who is married and has two other children, also underwent a heart angioplasty last week and has been taking medication for that condition.

"He asked me to apologize to his fans and friends," Beers said. "This bizarre incident is completely uncharacteristic of Jeff Reardon."

He said Reardon, who made more than $11.5 million during his career, according to baseballreference.com, was not having financial problems

Is it common for depressed people to commit armed robbery? And with the nearly two year gap between the son dying and this, I think that's a shaky connection at best. If the jewelry store had somehow been involved in his son's death as some sort of cause (at least in his mind), then maybe.

I'm not a doctor by any means, but from what I know, this is a sort of opposite thing someone with depression would do. It takes energy and drive to commit armed robbery, which isn't characteristic of depression. Not to say there isn't necessarily some sort of mental illness behind these events; I'm just not sure this excuse is the best one.

If it was the depression and medicine he was on, it could be seen as a cry for help. Of course, there are much easier ways to cry for help. A surprising story though.

I saw the story link on Yahoo that read "Former MLB pitcher arrested for armed robbery" and I immediately thought of someone like Dwight Gooden or Steve Howe, guys that were always in trouble. I wasn't expecting Reardon. Very surprising...

Jeff Reardon is a fool and I hope one of these major league whiners finally gets some jail time. I am tired of pro athletes pulling off crimes that would land any of us in jail with no questions asked.

Me, neither.

For Reardon, I'd expect to hear a feel-good story. Like something about him helping to get people out of a burning building and such.

You know, like getting the save...not blowing it.

It's not common for depression sufferers to commit robbery, no. But, when it comes to the death of a child, sometimes, a person never gets over it. Sometimes, they can't find closure. Sometimes, they react in ways that we'll never comprehend because it's never happened to us.

Two years is nothing when it comes to the death of one's child. If he had documented issues ever since the death of his son, then it's very possible that that was an underlying cause.

I think we need to hear more facts before making a judgement.

If Reardon had a history of armed robberies and violence before his son's death, then and only then, could I say that he has no excuse for his crime.

Never will happen. As long as their is enough money and a decent lawyer to throw blame on society or something else, it will always be like that. It's the same with rock stars.

Two years wouldn't get me over losing one of my boys.

I'm in no way saying that I buy this, but I'm saying that a man can easily be distraught for that period of time after losing a child.

All seriousness aside, he wasn't really armed when he robbed my Braves of $8-900k, either.
