The Toilet Bowl, 49ers vs. Texans
Is anyone as geared up for this one as I am?! While the Texans somehow won this week, the Niners put up another loss and both teams are now 2-12, tied for the worst record in football and the Reggie Bush sweepstakes.
Assuming they both drop their penultimate games this week, they will meet in San Francisco with dueling 2-13 records. The winner gets Reggie Bush. The loser gets... I don't know, whoever else is in the draft and isn't a quarterback. I see this one playing out like the Little League episode of South Park, both teams doing everything they can to blow the big game. Quarterbacks handing it off to defensive lineman, running backs fumbling out the back of the end zone with nobody around them, each kickoff sailing out of bounds for a 40-yard-line start. I'm telling you, this game is going to be gold. |

I'm just not as certain as everybody else that Houston will be gunning for Bush. Dominack Davis doesn't exactly suck. He's just stuck behind the same god-awful offensive line that the doesn't-exactly-suck David Carr has.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if the Texans trade their pick for a bunch of other picks.

Yesterday it was suggested that the commish make an exception for this game and tell the two that the winner gets the first pick (assuming nobody is still in contention). Though it won't happen, it would be interesting. But then it will probably be interesting watching both try to lose.
And I agree about the Texans. RB is not their biggest need.

I still don't see anyone trading that first pick. It's Reggie Bush. If you're not drafting him for how head and shoulders he is above his peers, you're drafting him to appease your fans.

The Texans biggest need is for offensive lineman though. A bunch of them. Depending upon who is available in FA I think it would be best to trade down and get whoever the top O-lineman in the draft is.

The best-case scenario for them, based on what I've heard, is to trade the 1 to another Top 5 team, take D'Brickashaw Ferguson, and use the other picks to fill some other need positions. |

Does anyone really think the players or coaches, half of whom will be with different teams next season (if they're still in the league at all) really care about next year's draft pick?

Agreed...both teams are going to be trying to win this game just as if both were undefeated. |

You know, neither team really needs Reggie Bush.
Domanick Davis is good enough, I guess. Frank Gore has looked good this year for the 49ers and they still have Kevan Barlow (who sucks, but is still a decent enough option considering their other holes). Of the three other teams that will have high picks -- the Packers, Jets, and Saints -- only the Jets really strike me as a team that could use a RB. Curtis Martin may not have much left in the tank and Derrick Blaylock is not going to be an efficient replacement, I don't think. The problem is, Bush is so good and so highly touted that he can change a team's plans. The Texans or 49ers would be just as smart to pass on Bush and fill holes via trade as they would be to draft Bush and then deal one of their running backs for a pick or two later in the draft. Granted, dealing the rights to Bush will net you a lot more. But at the same time, the opportunity to land a one of a kind player like Bush doesn't come along very often.
