I suppose so. I've never checked. My birth makes me Scottish, I am Canadian. I suppose I could return to the UK at any time. Many countries grant de facto citizenship to foreign born children of citizens. I believe that Canada and the US have reciprocal laws granting dual citizenship to children who qualify.
My real point is that if some feel it wrong for athletes to play for a different country than the one they were born in then they should feel the same for anyone who comes from another country and plays for the US or Canada. Edit: To clarify; under international rules, if you have never played internationally for another country you can choose to play for a different country that you become a citizen of. Some exceptions have been granted especially around the breakup of the Soviet Union, ie. Ukrainian or Khazakstan Hockey and Soccer players who may have played for USSR or the "United Team" have been allowed to switch.

I don't have a problem with A-Rod or any other player not playing in this... but his reason for not playing is weak, IMO. You'll offend people either way, who cares...

I for one accept his reasoning. If you ask a parent to pick one child over another, they couldn't. To a similar extent I think that he respects and loves both his country and his heritage enough that he simply cannot choose one over the other.

If you mean this for the WBC, then I agree. Man-Ram and Pedro shouldn't play for the United States team. Or they could do it the exact opposite way, where they determine teams by where you play and not where you were born. So that way it would be like an All-Star team from each country sent to compete. But the US would clearly dominate that, which would make it a lot less fun. |

Or he could tell the truth and point out that it's a poorly conceived idea and his participation doesn't benefit him.

I can't imagine why anyone cares about this decision. Honestly, talk about looking to be offended.
Although the "After thoughtful deliberations with my family..." line cracked me up. Does anyone seriously think he did that?

I think we have to realize the American culture favors individualism more than most, and cares the least about what others think. Alex Rodriguez is someone inbetween two cultures and not exactly your typical white sports fan.
