Advice on Negotiation
I have the top player in the league on my team, with truly Michael Jordan-like numbers---10's across teh board, League MVP, etc, etc.
His contract is up this year. He's the top paid player currently at 18,500,000 per year. He's asking for a 5-year contract for $25,000,000. I'm a wild-card type team, lousy pitching, but having him on my team really makes the game fun and I'd like to re-sign him. I don't want negotiations to go sour and have him not re-sign, but at the same time, I'd love to pay him less and for fewer years. How do I know if it is a reasonable offer and whether or how to counter? Will I be looking at a .200 hitter making 25 million when he is 35 and 36 years old? Any advice or suggestions? Thanks, TJ |

How old is he now? If you're really in love with the player, you'll have more fun with him than you will without him, whether you make the playoffs or not.
If he's asking $25/5 I don't think you'll be able to get away with a whole lot less than that. In fact, if you're wanting to try and get less years, you'll probably have to offer more than $25 and that really isn't too feasible. You'll probably have at least a couple of shots before he gets angry and walks, no matter what, so you might try $23/5 or $25/4 and see where that gets you. But you're not going to get him much cheaper than the $25 he's asking for. |

Typically, my experience has been that you get three shots in the majority of cases. The more times he refuses, the more likely he is to refuse anything less than what he's asking for.
I've also seen that players over 30 are usually willing to take fewer years than they are asking for as long as the dollars are in line. So, if he's 30 or something, you could try offering something like 25 for 3? Or less if you want to try your luck.

More details
oops...I meant to include this.
My superstar is 31 right now, making 18,750,000. He wants a 5-year deal for 24,000,000. I'm not sure how productive he will be making 24 mil when he is 36. Also, I know each league is different, but does the game generate reasonable figures in terms of salary requests? |

Give it to him. If he tanks it in a few seasons just waive him and some ****** (the AI) will pick him up and save you the money. I just gave a 33 year old pitcher 17M for 5 years and he had 3 good seasons, season 4 his ratings went south. I tried to trade him - no offers. Put him on waivers and 4 teams claimed him... Now I got nothing for him, but that is better than the 34M I would have lost with him..... |

Ok, I originally thought it was an online league he was talking about.
I bet the Red Sox wish there were some OOTP A.I. GM's in MLB so they could put Manny on waivers!

Shouldn't AI teams be looking at the bottom line in a better way?

Here's the trick:
Edit the guy so that he has 1's across the board, sign him, then pump his numbers back up to where they were! ![]() Seriously, that's about the only way you can get him to sign for less. There is another, riskier way to try to get him though. Let him go to free agency. Let another team sign him. Simultaneously, you sign the best player(s) you can at positions where you don't need guys. Then try to trade for him using your newly signed players (or the old ones you had). This is very risky and there's a good chance it won't work, but sometimes the AI will do it.
