Lost postition learned???
Twice I have had players learn a new position in spring training only to have them loose that ability later if I switch them to another postion in an emergency situation . Both times this has happened with a player who has learned Catcher. When I had a string of injuries I switched that player's position from Catcher [that he learned in spring training] back to another he can play to fill in, say 1B. After my injured player returns and I try to put the fill in back to Catcher - I can't switch to that postion! They no longer have that postion listed as one of the positions they can play. Anyone else had this happen?

First of all, I haven't had this happen (to my knowledge). Second, is this purely simmed games, online, solo? Lastly, why would you switch (I'm assuming physically edit the position from the player screen) when you can just fill him in temporarily in the lineup, or simply substitute him from the lineup screen prior to the game?
I play almost entirely solo with little simming, so I usually keep these kinds of issues under my control. Maybe that's why I have not seen evidence of the problem. In addition, I train backup OF more often than catchers. Sidenote. I'm not sure why a multi-positional player's position would ever be changed except to enhance trade opportunities. As long as he is included in the depth charts it doesn't matter even when simming does it? |

Solo simmed leagues. The players I changed to catcher were players with great hitting abilities but lousy fielding skills at positions where I already had very good players in both hitting & fielding. The studies presented on this site have already mentioned the value of good gloves at certain positions [infield -CF etc] and putting sluggers at C and 1B for example. I could have simply filled them into the line-up w/o physically changing the position but I did not - to my regret. But that doesn't change the fact that the player should not lose his rating at a position he learned in spring training. I have never had this happen to a player who learned throughtout the season - in minors or majors.

You shouldn't have to change the primary position. If the player is rated at the other position you should just be able to plug him in, even without changing his primary position.
I have never seen this.. but I do not use the Position Learning capabilities of Spring Training that much, so I may have just missed it. |

I have not seen anything like this, however if I need to play a person at a different position in an emergency I just play them there and make no changes to the player. I have had quite a few players learn new positions in ST.

I taught a guy with no position ratings (he was a DH) to play 3B in spring training. According to the spring training report, he had successfully learned the position. When I looked at him, however, he still had no position listings.

I'll change the position of a player just to make auto manage work better. Especially in the minors when I have players coming and going between levels and want certain ones to keep playing a position or to switch when a better prospect comes along.
I don't think I've ever had a player develope an arm rateing after learning a position. Players never recieve an outfield arm if they were an middle infielder. I'm pretty sure I've never had a player get a catcher arm rating but not positive. |

I've seen this happen -- though only once in season....
Happens quite a bit to me in spring training though. I generally teach minor leaguers to play multiple positions in-season, and wind up with players with a lot of D and E ratings at positions. Sometimes these players become role players for me -- the LH thumper off the bench, the 5th OF who does my pinch-running, etc. I jack up their points in specific categories like plate discipline or power at the expense of their defense - and eventually some of their positional ratings will disappear..... It makes sense if you think about it... 10 years down the road, I doubt you could realistically expect to see Josh Phelps ever catch again. Also - re: arm ratings, the process is slow, but using Rolens original roster set from last year, Chipper Jones had no OF arm rating.... after a couple seasons, his arm made it up to a 'D' rating. |
