Da Bears

The D has been pretty incredible even though they gave up their first touchdown in 37 quarters today, in Tampa

The vaunted 1985 Defense, after 11 games, gave up 127 points. This year, they've only given up 120.

I know their offense is rather offensive, but if they can get a few field goals they might be the team to beat in the NFC.

I don't want to be premature, but I think they've exceeded everyone's expectations so far.

I love Da Bears, but in order to have a realistic chance, Bears management had to fix the QB situation. (Orton was 14/28 with 134 yards... 4.8 yard average; maybe Grossman sucks too) We have no deep pass threat.

Actually for a rookie quarterback he is doing pretty good really. I was surprised to see how well he handles himself. The team is riding the defensive wave right now, and the Bears are playing very very well...

I just think that in the playoffs, Seattle will eat the Bears up. Better team on BOTH sides of the ball. I would love to see that playoff game. Would be a grand one to watch live.

considering that they probably weren't expected to play nearly as well as they have, I'm just happy they're doing well

I didn't get to see the game today, was visiting relatives in St. Louis and, of course, they showed the Rams game (which was a pretty good one at least). They did interrupt to show the defense causing Simms fumble on his own one though.

The Bears D is ranked #1 and Seattle is at #15
The Bears are leading Seattle in everyone of the key defensive categories except for one.

Points per game:
Bears 11.0
Seattle 18.7

Yards given up:
Bears 252
Seattle 315

Interceptions:
Bears 14
Seattle 9

Fumble recoveries
Bears 6
Seattle 4

Passing yards given up:
Bears 161
Seattle 212

Rushing yards:
Bears 91.2
Seattle 102.9

The only key stat that Seattle is ahead of the Bears is in takeaway differential. Seattle is only leading by three in that category. +2 to the Bears -1.

So, I'll give you "one side of the ball." The offensive side, where Seattle is ranked# 1 and Chicago is at #28, is a no-brainer.

Then again, Da Bears D over Seattle's D is a no-brainer, as well.

ps: Don't you answer PMs any more?

I get the impro that AA is from the Midway.

If so, good to see I'm not the only Bears fan here

Just a quick comparison, the Superbowl winning 2000 Baltimore Ravens gave up 128 points through 11 games. They scored 191 points in that span (compared to 182 for the 2005 Bears)

Key play of the game. The only thing better than that was the subsequently momentous one yard drive, culminatinating in the game's first score.

I never made that comparison. Great info, thanks! So, anything is possible?

Nah... other than a slight advantage in INT%, Dilfer's got him beat. Over a yard per attempt, and a 59.3% to 54.9% advantage in completion percentage.

They both suck though.

you mean Orton > Tony Banks

Trent Dilfer's 2000 stats: 134-226, 1502 Yds, 12 TD and 11 INT (76 Passer rating) in 11 games

Kyle Orton's stats: 159-292, 1523 Yds, 9 TD, 12 INT in 11 games - Don't know his passer rating. (62.5 thorugh 10 games)

Nah... I wish they had individual sack totals for each guy in 2000 (anyone know where I can find them?) so I could really compare... but I think Banks and Dilfer were actually basically a push. FootballOutsiders' metrics actually rate Banks higher than Dilfer that year.... I would imagine that Banks played against tougher D's.

Crap, I was looking at Bank' s stats when I posted that. Looking back at the 2000 Ravens, its amazing that there offense sucked so bad with Priest Holmes, Jamal Lewis, and Brandon Stokley.

Here is a comparison I found between the top defenses of all time. The article was written in 2000 during the Baltimore run.

I'm pretty sure L_R's asking about sack totals for the two quarterbacks; i.e. which one was sacked more often.
