I don't see this as a fire sale.

As a Met fan I'm cautious. Even though it wasn't much to acquire him (#2, #3 pitching prospect from AA) he doesn't want to come to NY and his antics in uniform (not standing for God Bless America) will not be tolerated in NY.
I went to a Florida/Mets game last year. There was a banner from the upper deck "Delgado, an American disgrace". I don't think hardcore fans will fully warm to Delgado as I don't think I will. |

I like this deal for the Mets. With Delgado, and the possible acquisition of Wagner, they could be division winners in 2006. They're certainley my pick to win the division, as of now. Free Agency could easily change that, though. As for the Marlins, its a good deal too. They're obviously building for the future, and right now they get a 1B of the future(he hit 11 HRs in about 100 ABs last year). Not to mention a great pitching prospect to go along with Olsen and Sanchez.

I don't understand how anybody can pick a team not named the Atlanta Braves to win the NL East.
Not until they DON'T win it, anyway.

With Nady on the way, trading Jacobs was something that I thought would come soon. I wasn't surprised. Petit is a good prospect but the Mets are getting a quality batter in return that produces. It won't be like the last time we traded a top pitching prospect *coughkazmircough*. Plus, we get to keep Milledge!

but ya I'm sure that no-one realzies that Delgado isnt American, and they'll hold it against him. Unless he's using teh flag as a doormatt I really dont' get the big flap about it. as for the Marlins, what is the reason why folks don't go to the games? Is it the fire sales, teh ownership, the crappy stadium, the ugly uniforms, or maybe folks are tired of baseball by april? Seems odd that the state where everyone goes (almost) for spring training has one of the worst fan support. |

It didn't turn out to happen, but there was no one there in April when things still looked great. |

I'm not questioning Delgado's ability because it certainly is there. But across the political spectrum (liberals, conservatives and everything in between) with the exception of those on the Upper West Side and at Columbia, New Yorkers tend to be fairly patriotic and proud of their country.
Also, Delgado didn't want to come to NY in the first place. He would have signed as a free agent last year. Metropolitan fans, like myself, have nightmares of Alomar and Vaughn dancing in our heads. On the positive note, the Mets didn't give up anything to get him. Jacobs was a one-month wonder and Petit is nothing special. Plus, the Mets got nothing from 1B last year for the most part, a position which is generally an offensive one. And Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the United States. Hat tip to Wikipedia: Puerto Ricans have been U.S. citizens since 1917 by a statutory law called the Jones-Shafroth Act (or Jones Act) which can be modified at any time by the US Congress (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Politics_of_Puerto_Rico) |

Like I said, until they DON'T win the division, it's not a smrt thing to bet against them doing so.
