Howard is very good but don't fall for the "25 year old rookie who shows potential and will be a star" thing. If he can contribute as much as Pat Burrell (which is a reasonable expectation) it can only help the team.
What the Phillies really need (and have needed for 10 years) is some pitching.

This is probably my favorite trade in the history of professional sports. Thank you, Kenny! I guess I would've preferred Rowand on a team I gave a crap about, but now I have a favorite National League team.
By the way, I don't see how this is good for the White Sox at all. This is another in a long line of the Wheelin' and Dealin' Kenny doing really stupid things. |

Phillies didn't need Thome at all for that price.

I got PMs from people to tell me not to post such idiotic rumors. Shows what you know. I just post what I read/hear.

There are many callers who "wish" certain deals happen. We don't need more BS cluttering the forums, we already have enough of that. Just some constructive criticism. Others on the board will flame you all the time if you post crap like that. Just letting you know before hand as you get used to the community. " |

If this trade is only Rowand for Thome, well then it's actually not a bad trade.
We need a DH. Thome is a hell of a lot better than Everett. We have outfielders to spare. It's a shame we lost one of our better fielders, but I think we will be just fine. It had to be done. If we can't sign Paulie, then this probably means we'll need someone else. Unless Ozzie goes with Iguchi batting 3rd, which I think he would thrive there.

It didn't have to be done. Unless Thome hits 50 home runs, and there's zero reason to expect this, it's a bad trade. The White Sox easily could've utilized Anderson by just having Podsednik DH. Sure, Podsednik isn't the prototypical DH but if they're so sure Anderson is ready then he'd more than make up for that. This is, any way you slice it, a horrible deal. It's worse than the Lee trade, worse than the Colon deal (which actually was decent), and worse than the Ritchie deal. Can someone please bump this thread in 2009? |

From MLBTradeRumors.com...
"At this point, the Jim Thome for Aaron Rowand trade is old news (at least with the speed news travels around the Internet). ESPN is reporting that Buster Olney broke the trade, although I think Bruce Levine may have had it first. One part of the deal that's getting zero publicity so far is the White Sox's inclusion of 22 year-old lefty starter Daniel Haigwood. Once you add it all up, receiving Jim Thome and $22MM for Aaron Rowand, Haigwood, and a third player is nowhere near a good deal for the Sox. For this article, I want to focus on the potential of the known minor leaguer." http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2005/1...verlook_h.html more on it there From the looks of it... I think good ole Sox GM Kenster messed up again... figures eh?

I was hoping the Yanks would be able to steal Rowand from the Sox. Ah well. Congrads to Philly for getting there first.

Great, great, great trade for the Phillies. I'm surprised they were a) able to get anyone to take on Thome's contract and b) able to get something good out of it when everyone knew they needed to move Thome bad and c) didn't have to wait for the Winter Meetings to make it happen.
If Thome has a comeback, then that'd be swell for the Sox but even if he does, this is a long-term loss.
