I think Thome would fit right in with Chicago's small ball philosophy.

If the White Sox were actually a 'Small Ball' team?!? The White Sox were 4th in the AL in HRs. They won because of their great pitching. However, they'll need to raise their team OBP/OPS (Remove players like Podsednik/Uribe) if they want to have a chance next season.

I don't recall if you were in the threads for the ALCS and WS, when we spent a lot of time making fun of the media for labeling the White Sox as a small ball team, so let me say my earlier post was sarcasm-laden.

If the Sox really wanted to package Rowand plus Contreras/McCarthy in a trade, and all they were asking for was Thome, you'd be hearing about alternatives with other teams because there certainly would be a lot of interest out there for those Sox players at that price.

You know, this trade must have originated on sports talk radio. You can just hear the call in your head:

Howard Eskin: Next caller is Joe from Levittown. Go 'head Joe!
Joe from Levittown: Howard, the thing that's wrong with the Phillies is they gotta get rid of either Ryan Howard or Jim Thome. They can't go into next season with bothathese guys onna roster.
Howard Eskin: Tell me something I don't know, Joe, please! C'mon!
Joe from Levittown: Well, I gotitall figured out. The Phillies should trade Thome to an American League team becaus the man needs to be a DH. He's just gotta be a DH, he's too biganfat and slow to play in the National League.
Howard Eskin: Joe you haven't said anything interesting yet.
Joe from Levittown: Well this is what we do: we trade Thome to Cleveland for that Coco Crisp, that Ja-ha-ronny whatever shortstop kid they got there, and that pitcher there, Cliff Lee. Straight up. I mean ifyagotta toss in Gavin Floyd or Cole Hamels, who cares, they're never gonna be any good anyways.
Howard Eskin: Never happened. Never happened Joe! The Indians would never make that trade in a million years.
Joe from Levittown: But -
Howard Eskin: Joe you're delusional. The Phillies can't get that trade done. I tell you this is what the Phillies gotta do: trade Thome to the White Sox, get a package of something like say Aaron Rowand for center field, they got that Brandon McCarthy kid in Triple A, and I'd say that Jose Contreras would look good in pinstripes, wouldn't you? It's time the Phillies got a Cuban on board better than Eddie Oropesa. That's what the Phillies need to do if this team has any hope a goin forward.

Pretty good, but you forgot to throw Bobby Abreu in on the deal. Eskin would love that, because when the White Sox don't win the Series again next year, it'll prove his point how you can't win with Bobby Abreu.

I always like Thome, but letting him go saved the Indians franchise. However, I know this is close to home for Jim, and while I hate to see a rival like the Chisox possibly improve, I hope it works out best for Thome. Would be even better if they give up too much for him and he proves to be just as washed up as he looked in Philly, but that's the Indians fan in me coming out.

gotta disagree with you there. The Chisox don't have to get rid of uribe or Podsednik obviously, since they just won the Series with them. I think people get too wrapped up in stats and don't consider the intagibles enough. Uribe and Podsednik were huge parts of the World Series champs.

ESPN is reporting that a deal is "on the verge" of happening: Thome for Rowand with the Phils also throwing in a good sum of cash.

Most importantly, no pitchers or prospects appear to be involved. Looks to be a straight-up trade.

Yes, but that would have been instead of Rowand.

I'm happy with the deal. Not that I have something against Thome...he seems like an actual nice major leaguer...but Rowand is a very welcome addition and Howard's not that much of a step down from Thome. (And could be better with more experience.)
