We thought about that a couple weeks ago. There was actually a thread where there was some voting done on some name ideas. Most people liked Catobase 2006 for continuity purposes and to pay homage to the original. The thought was to move forward with Catobase2006 as a working title. Obviously if the original Creator shows up and has issues, we can ditch the name.

As much as I appreciate Cato's work, I think we should come up with a new name for the new tool.

How about "OOTP Reference"?
<< I got nothin'. :P

To update this thread: I sent PMs out trying to get responses for our first question on the database tool to be used (see it on page 3 of this thread). It looks like MySQL is running away with it though. Also I'm still working on getting everybody into the Yahoo! Group. If you haven't already and still wish to be involved, send me a PM with your email address so I can add you to the Yahoo! group. I really do see this as the way we'll keep in touch in the future. So far posting here hasn't consistently gotten everybody together.

On to business:

lol... ...Back to this again? Ok, let's debate the finer points of the name then.

Ben Music, why do you think we need a new name?

Bumped because not everybody has subscribed yet and more conversation is happening there.

After all, it's not just us few who will be using it. But I'd also like to hear from those people who have experience in programming things like this. PLG is probably the biggest programming name in the community to have so far signed up, but there's still a few out there who I think we could greatly benefit from the advice of. We don't have to take their advice, but I'd still like to hear it.

MySQL
1 - Unix/Linux database
2 - Free database
3 - SQL compatible database

4 - MySQL or postgres ???

I heard that postgres is fast and 100% open source but
harder to use than MySql

Isn't MySQL free under the GPL? I don't think the group is planning on selling this.

I'm soliciting to see if anyone knows if XML plus Javascript would get us to where we want to be. Both being able to use this tool with dynamic pages online, as well as being able to use it for solo play on one's PC.

I don't have a ton of experience/knowledge in that area. So sign up for the Yahoo group or post your info here.

basically the only difference that I ever found was that postgre has transaction locking(correct term?) while mysql doens't. While this is great for sites that are going to see a lot of traffic or ahve sensitive data, to be hoenst, I really doubt any OOTP site or user will eve test it enoug to warrant it.

never the less support for postgre could be added as an add-in mdule or patch

it is, my former employer was using it and to my knowledge we were nto using any license from the creators as we didn't make enough money.

As for Javascript/XML option that would actully be a possible solution to the solo/standalone issue that has cropped up. Great idea!

Wow, surprised I didn't see this sooner. I'd still like to get in, if there's room.

----------------------------
Interest Level: Medium - High
Programming experience?: a little, using PHP and SQL
Database experience?: MySQL, Oracle, MS Access
Reason you want to join?: I thought this was an awesome tool to use with OOTP, but thought there should be a better way of going about it.
Expected area you can help?: Anywhere help is needed, but mostly with layout, data flow, etc...
Anything else?: Not that I can think of. Contact me with questions.

And my answer to the first question is that this should be done using MySQL. I think it would just be a happy medium between those with tons of database experience and those with minimal but still want to use the product.

Why not? Like I said, Jeff Cato created a great tool, then left us. This tool, though inspired by the old, will have no input at all from Mr. Cato, so why use the name?

And you can just call me Ben.

I posted in the old thread but I just want to renew my pledge to make a user manual/instruction guide much like the one here:

http://www.allsimbaseball.com/battmontcato

Something like this, zipped up and downloadable with the program itself.

That's definitely cool. Thanks for the offer and if we ever get a finish (or nearly finished ) product, we'll let you know.

ok time to give this a shot in the arm.

For those that are extermely bored, I'm started to do up a web-based solution using the CATO DB from the Canadian Baseball League (thanks chrispi!), and while I havne't had muh time to do this, it's a start.

Check it out at http://cato2006.blnetworks.biz/player.php and of course, feedback is wanted. I'll be continuing to add to this as I continue but for now, only the player.php page really has anything on it. As for pace, be gentle folks, I"m doing this on what very little free time I have

Pretty cool, Chris. I like the functionality that would offer. One question... looks like you only show the first 25 players alphabetically for any single sort. I assume that's just a temporary thing?

Not to add a business requirement, but can you add an importer that would take an existing Catobase and convert it to a 2006 version? This would be a huge value to existing online leagues, especially.
