Catobase2006 Feature request
As you have all seen in other threads, there's a little project being started here called Catobase2006. Please list any features you'd like to see in the new version. Feel free to be as detailed or concise as you want. I'll list a couple examples of stuff I want to see below.

I am wary of the "feature request" idea. The three above things are great and what we want, but this should not turn the project into a Christmas tree where everyone can try to pile on all the ornaments they want. Like SandMan said in the other thread, CatoBase and its successor in this idea should simply be a recreation of baseball-reference.com and not some all-encompassing do-everything utility. There is actually a whole lot from B-F that could be added, but I just hope people indeed keep the ideas within that framework.
However, if the database as created for or by this CatoBase descendent could serve as a basis for other utilities (if that is possible, I am hardly a programmer) doing different things perhaps that could be useful. For instance, CatoBase gives a Team Leaderboards page where for each league the 3 best and 3 worst team seasons in various stats are shown. Maybe someone would think it cool to make something that separately makes txt or html file(s) that lists the top & bottom 25 or an ordered list of all seasons for the full league in specified stats. That might be really easy to do if the CatoBase database can be accessed to pull out the information. |

I'm very interested in this. I just hope it all comes together. As far as the features, I say catobase was basically what I could ever want. I hope whatever is made is at least as god as the original.

okay for starters.
1. Options to hide or display stats on the page. example is player salaries. This bothers me to see a figure on the page of 10M when I am playing with finances off. Would just like to see this not appear at all since we don't see it in game. 2. Presimmed stats counted in career totals and leader boards. Make it an option so if some don't want this counted it would not be. 3. Players separated into ACTIVE and INACTIVE lists as well as a All players list. 4. Older pages team pages don't need to be rebuilt. Would like to see logos stay with the teams and not get replaced when a team moves or changes logos. Hate it when I have a 1901 team with a nice logo I created, only to see the team move in 1953 and its logo replace in all the reports from 1901-1952 with the new logo. 5. Would also like to see no limit on the number of photos you can use in the system. Currently the limit is 10,000 images.... 6. Dynamic pages so that columns can be sorted, especially on the team pages. 7. League draft listing, simply take this from draft log text file, simple read and write. Also maybe make the text files from the game in the league new available in the cato pages. Team history would be a good one to have. 8. Option to load stories from the new box. This can be stored in a file for each year by combining the stories from league box folder, then just have the hyperlinks removed or keep them in to link to the player pages.... 9. Option to bring in the ratings from the player ranker program, simply read the output put into a table and have this displayed on the player page if requested. 10. Option to create pages for ALL players including minor leaguers. Perhaps an option to have Minor League team pages and player links like the major league teams. I personally would like to be able to create 4 separate catobases for a league, one for each of the levels, but most people could care less about the minor league stats.... but I would like to see it as an option to keep these stats. 11. Also bothers me to see the team draft list built from the player history text files when this information is available in the league draft log and also the team history pages. Using the draft log we know the order of the draft and can calculate the selection number from this. No need to read through every p#.txt file to get this. 12. Option to print out pages or groups of pages. Would like to have a hard copy as an encyclopedia of some of my better league ideas. Can you imagine a league having it own TOTAL BASEBALL encyclopedia? 13. A biggie - if the stat can not be calculated the program should have error handling and write out the player line to a error log instead of blowing up. This would include the winshare. Give the player a 0 winshare and allow the end user to see the log and then edit the table for this player. Would then like to see the ability to rerun winshares for one team. 14. Tables maintenance program so those that do not own ACCESS can still modify the data if an error does occur. This would be separate from the catobase program and not built in, but it is a biggie..... 15. Day by day game logs. This could be a separate add on that allow you to select a player and then get his day to day log, then flag the player in the database and when his page is create a hyperlink could be placed on the page to show that there is a log for the player. Would like to have this for some players exceptional seasons..... this is available in the csv files and could be read from there, no need to put into database. 16. Two versions of the output. One the current html pages. Another a encyclopedia for desktops, with tables and forms. Well those are just a few off the top of my head. Hopefully this will get others thinking about what they would like to see in KATOBASE. |

I agree with Sandman on the photo limit. I would also like to see a no limit on this.
I also would like to see all-time team vs team records in both regular and playoff games for each and every year played. Sortable statistics. (Ill post more when I have time off from work). |

and expanding on #15...day-to-day box scores on the team schedule listing of scores. #10 I will also back just as strongly with the ability to display the standings of the minor leagues in whatever way the user desires. its imperative that any previous catobase outputs can be incorporated into this version, or that any new version allows databases to be built without having to be at the "proceed to next season" screen. If you can build the new catobase with all the data from the past then it should be fine.
