Whats good about OOTP

I'm interested in hearing, in your own words - a couple of sentences that would tell me (or any other person that never had played the game) whats good about OOTP

Hit me!

A very important feature of the game for me is the way you can customize the game, make your own leagues etc...

I'm still fairly new to the game, so I can't go as in-depth as some of the other posters here, but I'll give it a shot.

If you're looking for a baseball sim game, OOTP is the best game out there for my money. You can get as involved as you want, including not very much. Want to just have a simple game where you make simple decisions? You can do that. Want to control every team, create new leagues with teams in various markets, watch salary structures and finances, agonize over the 40-man roster, and make every other tough decision owners and GMs have to make? You can do that, too.

OOTP also has one of the most helpful communities you'll find, with the creator and programmer involved in the message boards, honestly caring about the feedback, and working to incorporate the communty's suggestions into the game.

The big pros to the game are the flexibility and support for non-MLB leagues, at least for me. I also really like the new engine.

The best thing about ootp is that it gives realistic results while creating it's own unique baseball universe. Perfect? No but it gets better with each version of the game.

The most important thing to me is the ability to import your career from version to version. I have played 11 complete seasons one game at a time with ootp over three and a half versions (4-6.5). At about 8 weeks to complete a season that is a huge investment of time and well worth it when I know I will be able to continue it with each new version.

On the ehm board at SI it has been stated that EHM and FM will "never" do this. That with world wide leagues and the structure of the database it is either impossible or would take too much effort. It's been stated that only a small minority would even want to use this feature. I don't believe that is true at all, IMHO it's simply the fact that people have been told it can't be done so they don't waste time thinking about it. If a poll was conducted that said it could be done easily ( I know, it can't be) but would only be done if it's what players wanted you would have a lot more than a small minority voting for it. Sure you have a lot of players that start over with each new version or even with each new patch. But with ootp you have many that continue an old career and also play a new one. And of course you have many online leauges that every year have the annual discussion on when they will move up to the new version.

With ootp we have been told that v6 to ootpbm2006 may not be possible because of massive changes. We have also been told that Markus will do his best though to make the import work. And lastly we have been left with the impression that ootpbm2006 will import to ootp2007 but to my knowledge it has never been said that it will be done. Up til now I had faith that Markus would continue to make the importing work for ootp but after reading this

Marc's response..

This isn't an easy thing to do for any game I'm afraid which is why SI products don't support such an idea.

You 'can' do it - however you have to approximate any new statistics/attributes which players might have in the new version which can lead to an unrealistic feel in game (ie. your star player might suddenly be naff etc.).

Add to this (with SI products) the fact that you might be half-way through a season in a league which irl has now got half the clubs in that it used to have (because we update the leagues etc. according to real-life changes) and suddenly you can hopefully see why this would be a very challenging thing for us to implement across 50 odd nations league and cup competitions ...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

on the fof forum I'm just not as sure. I can only hope he is only speaking of FM and EHM and that ootp will still be able to continue our dynasties.

Sorry Marc, couldn't quite get it in two sentences.

Any comments on the importing should go here so this thread can stay on topic. Thanks.

I don't think OOTP will be as close to EHM/FM as some think, there are just too many differences to start with.

Back to the original post -

I love the customization of creating fictional leagues with such ease

I believe Marc was referring there to FM / EHM. That said Markus is going to do as much as he can to make things importable between v6 and OOTPBM 2006. If you want, make a new thread for this discussion so this thread does not steer off track!

Sorry Marc, didn't mean to threadjack. Just thought it was important to say.

Importability of v6 leagues into the new game is the most important thing to me at this point.

The present league I run has to be imported into the new game or there's really no need for me to purchase it.

I understand that most won't think its this important, but I do.

I love the career progression. I love watching the players develop from draft day to retirement. I spend a lot of time just looking at career stats for my favorite guys.

I play with fictional players in a intial draft. But i use the MLB's team names and logos. So being able to customize is important.

I like the results, customizability and, most of all, the record keeping (in season and career) that the game keeps.

pretty much my thoughts as well, I like to have full control over my fictional leagues & the continuity from version to version is vital for online leagues and even solo leagues in most cases.

I love the way the game generates realistic stats that conform to baseball reality, while still allowing the player to create his (or her) own baseball universe in virtually every way - adding leagues, teams, logos, and photos, creating online leagues or letting the player simply sit back and let things unfold in "god mode," and recreating any era from baseball history.

The customizability is probably the biggest feature. Being able to setup our leagues the way we want them is huge. This goes beond just naming the team and setting the divisions. The player modifiers are a very nice feature.

The way online leagues work is good as well. Letting the owners ftp their exports is a must have feature.

Hopefully, all of this makes it into the next version.

Truthfully, the best part about the game for me is in game management. There are so many options to the player, almost as many as a real game from a manager's standpoint. There are plenty of times I have watched baseball on TV, second guessed the managers, and then gone and try what I would have done instead. Sometimes for the better, sometimes not.

Another great thing I once did was simulate the entire 100 years or so of World Series baseball (even though 1904 and 1994 did not actually have a series, I simed one anyway for the "what if" case). The results, on default settings using the Lahman (sp?) database, were strikingly close to real baseball. Not exact of course, as players perform "about" what they would have done in real life so some results were different. But all-in-all, it tells me that the stat engine in the game is sound, complete, and accurate.

Being able to turn financials on or off to suit my current mood.

All the great art available from player photos to logos to stadiums. More slots for artwork!

Being able to quickly sim many seasons with decent managerial strategies. I have never played a 'game' manually and never will, so that aspect of this sim has no appeal for me whatsoever. If in-game wasn't included, I'd still buy the next version of OOTP. (If you want to play a game, play Strat-O-matic. Its a great replay game)

Customization of league size, schedule length and parks.

Historic leagues, current leagues, fictional leagues. All have appeal.
