I like this poll much more than the AP.

barely beating a team that lost to michigan state doesn't cut it unless that was the only or one of few times this season that they've "played down to the level of their opponents." championship caliber teams must play like championship caliber teams. in my opinion, virginia tech has played much more like a championship team this season. |

I think I'm going to have to rank at least Texas above USC. USC has just had too many squeakers this year. They remind me of that Ohio State championship team that kept winning games by last-second field goals and referees' blown calls. I wouldn't have ranked that Ohio State team #1 even after they beat Miami in the national championship.

Coming from somebody that watched every Ohio State game in 2002 (actually, pretty much all of them in the past 15 years), the bad calls that the Buckeyes got called against them pretty much evened out by the end of the year, as these things usually do. The call in the first OT in the Fiesta Bowl wasn't very good, I will admit that. But with 2:18 left in the game with the Buckeyes leading 17-14, Miami's #22 (Jennings) grabbed ahold of Chris Gamble's jersey not once, but twice during his route. No flag was thrown. That should have been defensive holding and an automatic first down which would have allowed the Buckeyes to run even more time off the clock. So the non call and the call evened themselves out.
