Would have rather seen A-Rod get it but I won't sleep over Tejada winning the award.

Anyome but Soriano or Giambi but I still think it should have been A-Rod.

Tejada had a great year, but I personally would have voted for A-Rod or Thome. Soriano predictably got votes for the "where the heck did he come from?" factor. He had half the season Giambi did, but Jason loses for the "we can't give him the MVP *every* year" factor.
As far as A-Rod goes, sure, the voters can give an award to a guy on a last place team who isn't nearly the best player (Andre Dawson, 87) but can't... ugh. Jason

I was pleasantly surprised that Tejada won the MVP. Sportsworld was really playing up A-Rod to win it so I thought it might have gone to him. All the candidates are top-notch and all deserved to win it but I am glad Miggy scooped it. Cy Young and MVP!!!! It's great to be an A's fan!

well you guys know the postseason has no effect on the award...
In my opinion the voters got it right ... Tejada had a big impact on the A's. A-Rod did have a monster season, but this time I understand why he didn't get it... |

There was supposed to be the "Aaron Award" that was going to differentiate between best hitter and most valuable player. I don't know the full story, but I know somehow MLB dropped the ball.
There's an award for pitcher of the year, but there's no award for position player/hitter of the year. That's really what causes all the problems. Still, despite all the logic that Rob Neyer and Bill James and Baseball Prospectus have, and I'm almost always on the same side as those folks, I don't have a problem with players on winning teams getting the award instead of someone like A-Rod. I think taking "most valuable" to such a literal level as "this 75-win team would have won 42 games without X player" is not in the spirit of the award. Strictly speaking, the award is not about who was worth more wins than any other player. The A's sure are piling up awards...but no rings. I find that very interesting. |

It should have gone to ARod. The guy had probably the best season for a shortstop EVER in the history of baseball! And yet he doesn't get the award because he doesn't have Zito, Hudson, and Mulder on his team.
Dumb.

Here are the instructions accompanying the MVP ballot. Note that it specifically states that players from non-playoff teams are eligible.
Dear Voter: There is no clear-cut definition of what Most Valuable means. It is up to the individual voter to decide who was the Most Valuable Player in each league to his team. The MVP need not come from a division winner or other playoff qualifier. The rules of the voting remain the same as they were written on the first ballot in 1931: 1. Actual value of a player to his team, that is, strength of offense and defense. 2. Number of games played. 3. General character, disposition, loyalty and effort. 4. Former winners are eligible. 5. Members of the committee may vote for more than one member of a team. You are also urged to give serious consideration to all your selections, from 1 to 10. A 10th-place vote can influence the outcome of an election. You must fill in all 10 places on your ballot. Keep in mind that all players are eligible for MVP, and that includes pitchers and designated hitters. Only regular-season performances are to be taken into consideration. |

I read in the LA Times, per a clause in his contract, A-Rod recieved $200,000 for his finish in the MVP voting.
Does anyone else find it sick that a player making far and away more than any other major leaguer, with more than $20 million in salary earned in 2002 gets a bonus for not winning the MVP??

Most guys get hefty bonuses for finishing in the top 5 or top 10 in MVP voting. It's not really a big deal.
OTOH, The more money A-Rod makes, the more money that gets taken out of the Rangers' CEO's hands and put into the economy as far as I'm concerned. That 200k will either buy a new car and pay the salary for 4 people or go to a charity in all likelihood. Jason
