Up-to-the-minute Roster

Assuming we sit tight for the rest of the offseason, here is how we plan on shaping up this year. First the roster, then projected lineups, then a note on what we expect from our boys’

Here is how the roster plays’ out at this moment in time:

C – Byron Thiessen
C – MengLi Hui
1B – Ray Festa
1B/OF – Melvin Hagberg
2B/SS/3B/1B – Rey Moncayo
2B/3B – Ken Lancaster
3B/2B – Gene Halpern
SS/2B – Chris Lott
3B/SS – Geoff Jasmin
OF/1B – Clarence DiBenedetto
OF – James Lape
OF – Blair Payton
OF – Fermin Trujillo
OF – Eric Pennington

SP – Jose Langlois
SP – Jose Leonos
SP – Brandon Coto
SP – Thomas Burleson
SP – Cory Bayne

CL – Herman Trottier
MR – Moses Tamez
MR – Bobby Hollenbeck
MR – Bill Stoops
MR – Herman Tucker
MR – Tristan Mann

There is really one open spot, that of backup IF. As it stands, Geoff Jasmin would get the call up from way down in A ball to the big club, not an ideal situation. If possible, I may look to get a backup slick fielding infielder.

The big decisions come in 4 places:
- Picking Mann (3.08 ERA in Sept in 2012) over Arnie Stier
- Picking Hagberg over walking machine 1B Chet Rinehart
- Calling up Jasmin instead of holding onto Rinehart
- Making Bayne the 5th starter instead of a holdover

Each of these 4 spots will have little margin for error, and they won’t have much time for failure, especially Bayne and Mann.
Here are the key guys from AAA who could see significant big league time, in order of importance:

MR Arnie Stier
SP’s Ramon Quintana, Miguel Cordova and Gene Foxworth
1B Chet Rinehart
C Joaquin Salazar

Lineup and expectations to follow!

Draft Recap...

Well, short and sweet for the Dragons 2012 Draft. We had just 1 pick, in the 4th round, 83rd overall.

With the pick we selected SP Mark Schilling, 21. Schilling out of Troy St., actually could be a decent prospect. While he'll never be a world-beater, he's got a chance of at least hanging around in the minors. Who knows, a couple bumps and we could have a bona-fide player on our hands. He's got ratings of 5/4/6, throws 91-94 and has great endurance (8). He'll of course start out in Single-A ball.

Opening Roster Notes..

Well, our official roster is in, and when it came down to it, I went against a few of the things I said earlier. I put Mann in AAA and kept Stier up, as Stier was now a 4.5 star player (gold) to Mann's 2 blue stars. I also kept Rinehart because Hagberg's ratings took a hit. Opening Day is tomorrow! Yee-haw!

First Sim Recap: 4/5-4/10

Well, the first sim is in the books. I’m toying with a new recap plan, so we’ll see how this goes.

4/5 – We were off. 6 games were played

4/6 – Dragons 5, California Lions 0.
Fantastic win to open the season, as we grab 12 hits and a shutout. Ace starter Jose Langlois pitches a 3-hit shutout, striking out 12 and walking just 1. We also turned a DP, so he faces just 30 hitters. To top it off, we played flawless defense. Amazing.
Offensively, every hitter but Jose grabbed a hit, highlighted by 5 doubles! DiBen led the charge with 3 hits, a steal and 2 runs driven in. Moncayo doubled in a run and walked twice while Ray Festa had 2 singles, scoring twice.
Record – 1-0
This Sim – 1-0
Streak – WON 1!
PoTG – Jose Langlois

4/7 – California Lions 4, Dragon 3
Tough break here, as we were down 3 early and couldn’t make it all the way back. Leanos took the loss, allowing all 4 runs in 7 innings of work. He struck out, and walked, 2. We did however have our 2nd straight errorless game!
With the sticks, we were just 1 clutch hit away as we had 17 baserunners (10 hits, 7 walks). We did hit into 3 DPs however. Lape, Halpern and Leanos each grabbed 2 hits, as we scored 1 in each of the 3rd thru 5th innings. Moncayo had a single and 3 walks
Record – 1-1
This Sim – 1-1
Steak – Lost 1…
PoTG – Rey Moncayo

4/8 – Dragons 5, California Dragons 2
Big bounce-back win for us! Coto was excellent, allowing 1 run with 4 hits and 4 K’s in 8 solid innings. Hollenback allowed a homer to start the 9th, so Trottier came in to nail down his first save of the season. Again, NO ERRORS.
We brought out the big lumber this game, scoring all of our runs on home runs, hitting 4. Moncayo (1) hit a leadoff jack in the 2nd, and Payton (1) followed with a 1-out, 2-run shot that inning. Lott (1) then went solo in the 3rd with DiBen (1) finishing off our scoring leading off the 5th. All total, 11 hits and 3 walks. We were however caught stealing 3 times.
Record – 2-1
This Sim – 2-1
Streak – WON 1!
PoTG – Brandon Coto

4/9 – Washington Griffins 8, Dragons 5
Our pen bites us in a close one. Starter Burleson went just 4 innings, allowing just 1 runner, but ran out of gas. The pen then allowed 7 runs in 5 innings, with Stier taking the loss. Tucker allowed 3 and Trottier 2. Griffin player Rudy Lareau hit a 2-out, 3-run bomb to win it.
17 more runners for us on offense, giving us 63 in 4 games so far. Moncayo had 3 hits and a steal. Blair Payton doubled, and drove in 2 runs for us. Hollenbeck made an error, our first on the year.
Record – 2-2
This Sim – 2-2
Streak – Lost 1…
PoTG – Rey Moncayo

4/10 – Washington Griffins 2, Dragons 0
Make or break game…and we broke, not scoring a run on 6 hits. Cory Bayne seems to be a tough-luck loser again, allowing just 2 ER in 6 innings, striking out 5. Mo Tamez pitched 2 scoreless in his defense. We also had 2 errors…
Bayne had 2 hits for us, to sadly lead the offense. Pretty ugly
Record – 2-3
This Sim – 2-3
Streak – Lost 2…
PoTG – Cory Bayne

I know it's real early, but Lott is off to a good start. That's encouraging after his dismal first half last year.

Yeah I know. Burleson is going to be taxing on the rotation, but I'm figuring if I add an extra arm to the pen I'll be ok.

Sim Recap #2

4/11 - Washington 8, Nevada 7

In a see-saw game, we didn't get the last laugh as our 3-run 9th inning rally fell just short. The
Griffins just seemed one step ahead as we fell behind, 1-0, 2-1 and 4-2 only to tie each time. They
then took an 8-4 lead which would couldn't match.
Langlois had a poor outing, allowing 7 runs (6 earned) in 5+ innings, allowing 4 homeruns. Tamez came
in to allow a run in 2 innings, followed by Stoops coming in for a 1-2-3 8th.
Offensively, we did great, 13 hits and 5 walks. Lott hit his 2nd homer, a solo shot in the 3rd. Moncayo
hit a 3-run dinger in the 9th for his 2nd homer. Lott also doubled and walked twice. James Lape added
3 hits, Blair Payton 2, while DiBen had 2 hits and his 4th steal. Festa and Halpern each made errors
as we allowed 1 unearned run.

Record - 2-4
This Sim - 0-1
Streak - Lost THREE...
PoTG - Chris Lott - Double, Homer, 2 Runs, 2 RBI, 2 Walks.

4/12 - Nevada 4, Idaho 3

A big 4-run 4th inning gave us the win, as we barely held on. Jose Leonos picked up his first win of
the young season, allowing 2 Runs (1 ER) in 5 innings. The pen came in for 4 innings, allowing just 1
unearned run, culminating in Trottier's 2nd save.
9 hits and 2 walks for the offense, but 3 more errors as well. Blair Payton had 2 hits, driving in 2
while Chris Lott added 2 hits and scored. James Lape and Jose Leonos both drove in runs, though we
had 0 extra-base hits.

Record - 3-4
This Sim - 1-1
Streak - WON 1!
PoTG - Blair Payton - 2 singles, 1 run, 2 RBI's, error

4/13 - Idaho 2, Nevada 1

We lose a squeaker as Robert Seahorn shuts us down. Brandon Coto was the tough-luck loser, pitching
7 strong innings (2 ER, 3 H, 3 BB, 5 K) but falling to 1-1. Stopps again came in for a shutout inning.
Offensively, just 3 hits and 3 walks, plus we lost 2 runners in double plays. We scored our lone run
on a Gene Halpern solo shot in the 4th, his 1st on the year. Chris Lott walked twice, and DiBen and
Festa had the other hits

Record - 3-5
This Sim - 1-2
Streak - Lost 1...
PoTG - Brandon Coto - 7 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K

4/14 - Nevada 9, Utah 8...10 innings

Wow did we almost CHOKE. We were leading 8-0 after 5 only to see the Scorpions get 3 in the 6th and FIVE
in the top of the 9th. UGLY. Luckily we grabbed a run in the 10th to avoid TOTAL embrassment.
Burleson had his 2nd start and was FANTASTIC...for 4 innings. Just 1 hit, no walks and 2 K's, though
he only threw 44 pitches. Then it got ugly. Stier allowed the 3 run 6th and made into the 7th when
Trottier came in to finish that inning and the 8th. For some reason he came in VERY early, and it showed
as he was tattooed in the 9th, finishing up having allowed 4 ER in 1.2 innings. Tucker then came in,
and promptly allowed a 3-run bomb to tie it (2 ER charged to Trottier). He finished that inning, and Tamez,
who picked up the win cruised through the 10th.
Another great day offensively, 14 hits to go with 10 walks. Our only homer was a Hui 2-out, 3-run bomb
to start the scoring in the 3rd. Festa added 3 hits and 2 walks, Moncayo 2 hits and 2 walks, DiBen
a hit and 3 walks.

Record - 4-5
This Sim - 2-2
Streak - WON 1!!!
PoTG - Thomas Burleson - 4 IP, 1 H, 0 BB, 2 K.

4/15 - Nevada 6, Utah 2

Lookout! Back-to-back wins! Bayne and DiBen led the way in this one, as we're cruising at home now.
Bayne escaped the "tough luck" label to go 8.2 innings allowing just 2 ER, though he did allow 11 hits.
No walks and 2 K's in total. Hollenbeck came in to strike out the final batter.
10 more walks for the offense! This is awesome! 7 hits as well. The big blow was a 1st inning GRAND SLAM
from DiBen, his 2nd dinger on the year. He also added 2 singles. Halpern had 3 walks in the leadoff
spot, while Festa singled and walked twice, same as Lott. Lape hit a triple leading off the 7th but was
stranded

Record - 5-5
This Sim - 3-2
Streak - WON 2!!!
PoTG - Clarence DiBenedetto - 3-for-5, Grand Slam, 2 singles, run, 4 RBI's

4/16 - Colorado 2, Nevada 1...in 11 innings

Heartbreaker here as our pitching staff deserved better than 2 unearned runs on errors from Thiessen.
Langlois allowed just 1 UER in 7 innings, with 2 hits and a walk with 4 K's. Stoops then sailed through
the 8th, as did Trottier for the 9th and 10th. Hollenbeck allowed 2 hits in the 11th as a Thiessen throwing
error cost us the game.
4 measly hits and 4 puny walks for the offense. Thiessen singled in Moncayo who had walked and stole second
in the 4th for our run. Lape, Halpern and Rinehart added the other hits.

Record - 5-6
This Sim - 3-3
Streak - Lost 1...
PoTG - Jose Langlois - 7 innings, 2 hits, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K

4/17 - Nevada 9, Colorado 4

Big win for us to get at least one from the Rams. We took a big 9-0 lead to put this away early, though
the Rams did mount a minor comeback. Leonos goes to 2-1, allowing 4 ER in 6.2 innings. Tucker and Stoops
came in to close it out.
We notched 8 hits and 6 runs to get the 9 runs, mainly in the early innings. Ray Festa unloaded his 1st
homer, a 2-run shot in the 3rd. He also walked twice and scored a total of 3 times. DiBen had 2 hits, driving
in 2 while James Lape had a bases clearing double in the 1st.

Record - 6-6
This Sim - 4-3
Streak - WON 1!!
PoTG - Ray Festa - 1-for-2, HR, 2 BB, 3 R, 2 RBI

4/18 - Nevada 2, Colorado 1

Wahoo. We took the series by grabbing 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th! Brandon Coto again pitched well
only to not get a win, allowing 1 ER in 8 innings. He gave up 3 hits and a walk, striking out 8.
Hollenbeck pitched the 9th and got his 1st win.
Offensively, we actually DIDN'T WALK. At all. Kinda amazing really. We were really pretty silent, getting
just 3 hits in the first 8 innings (single by Hui and 2 hits, incl. a double from Festa.)
In the 9th, Ray Festa led off with his 3rd hit of the game, a solid single. Chris Lott then came up
and hit a....fielders' choice. My idiotic manager then brought Stoops in to pinch run, though it really
wasn't necessary. Rey "Boom Boom" Moncayo hit his 3rd homer to give us a 2-1 win and send the fans into
a frenzy.

Record - 7-6
This Sim - 5-3
Streak - WON 2!!!
PoTG - Rey Moncayo - Game-winning 2-run homer.

4/19 - Nevada 8, Texas 5...in 12 innings
Our 3rd Xinning game this sim, and we are now 2-1. We really battled this one, down 4-1 after the first
frame to take it and run our streak to a season long 3. Burleson had a poor outing, allowing 5 ER
in 3.2 innings, throwing 50 pitches. From there, the pen went 8.1 innings allowing just 5 hits, a walk
and no runs.
The big blast on offense was from 35-year-old vet Fermin Trujillo, who was 0-for-5 until he hit a
big 2-out 3-run blast to give us the 3-run lead. Gene Halpern also led the offense, grabbing 2 dingers,
driving in 3. DiBen added 3 hits including his 3rd homer (leading off the game) while stealing his 5th
base. Thiessen also added 3 hits.

Record - 8-6
This Sim - 6-3
Streak - WON 3!!!!
PoTG - Gene Halpern - 2-for-5, 2 HR's, 3 RBI's.

4/20 - Texas 4, Nevada 3

The Banditos get us back, as they turn our 3-2 lead into a 4-3 deficit in the bottom of the 8th.
Cory Bayne pitched well AGAIN, just 2 ER and 4 hits in 6 innings. Ray Festa and Spike Halpern made
bad errors though, costing us 2 runs in the 8th. Arnie Stier took an undeserved loss.
8 hits for the offense, led by 2 each from Halpern (2 RBI), Lape (1 RBI), and Hui.

Record - 8-7
This Sim - 6-4
Streak - Lost 1...
PoTG - Cory Bayne - 6 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K. 3rd good start in a row.

Pretty solid on offense, especially the OBP's. Hui is in vsR, while Thiessen is vsL. We also enter
Trujillo vsL for Payton, though that may change soon. I really have no offensive complaints so far.

It looks ugly, but this is a good season for our staff. I'd like to see Tucker and Trottier straighten
out, and 1 more innings per start from Burleson and I'd be ecstatic. I may callup a pitcher for a hitter
this week, since I think with Burleson needs help, but he only has 1 start and we have 3 off-days next
sim, so that may wait another week.

STUFF

Batting AVG: .256 (9th)
Homeruns: 15 (T-3rd)
Walks: 67 (1st)
Stolen Bases: 10 (10th)
Runs Scored: 68 (5th)

Pitching ERA: 3.12 (7th)
Opponents AVG: .222 (4th)
HRs Allowed: 11 (T-11th)
Walks Allowed: 29 (6th)
Runs Allowed: 55 (11th)

This is probably the best we've looked in this department since I took over. We're in the top half of
the league in every category and have good balance. If our pitching holds up...

Plus, we're outwalking opponents 67-to-29 (2.31 to 1)

SCHEDULE

4/21 - @ Texas Banditos. Series Tied 1-1
4/22 - OFF
4/23 - 4/25 - vs Minnesota Wolves. No record
4/26 - OFF
4/27 - 4/28 - vs New Mexico Dukes. No record
4/29 - OFF
4/30 - @ Kansas Storm. No record

Odd schedule with 3 off days and just 7 games. I'd settle for 4-3. It's all about progress.

Holy Crap. Blockbuster time!

Well, "THE BIG ONE" is finally here. I've made some decent sized moves since taking over the Dragons (picking up DiBen and Moncayo), but I don't think anything touches this one. In this one, not only are big names moving, but we're shifting pretty much the whole focus of the team.

We're sending starting SS Chris Lott, plus RP Moses Tamez, plus our 3rd rounder over to the Pennsylvania Freedom for SP Lowell Stang and SS Manuel Talamantez.

Before I go over the details, here is my thinking:
- Our rotation can now hang with any in the league. Especially if I can con Burleson into a 5th or 6th inning each start.
- Lott is a fantastic hitter, homers, steals, walks...you name it, but he was only marginally better than Moncayo, Festa, Halpern and DiBen were. So basically while I hate to lose him, I don't expect that we'll be a 3-run a game team all of the sudden.

Here are the career stats of each player

Pretty sweet. 18+ win average over the past 3 years. Slightly higher ERA this season, but his BABIP is
a very unlucky .340. I doubt that will last.

Pretty average, but what I like about Tally isn't his hitting. He's a 10 range SS with a .996 F%.
I'm hoping he not only helps a touch on O, but also makes our entire staff better.

NEXT SIM TOMORROW!
