Champion's League Baseball
I've decided to start a new league - one matching up the greatest teams in MLB history. I've pulled out the 30 top teams (by my choosing, mixed with MLB.com's tournament and throwing in 3 recent teams) and put them into 2 leagues (AL/NL) and 6 divisions (named - for lack of a better reason - for my 6 favorite athletes).
The league looks like this: American League Keller Division: 2001 Seattle Mariners 1973 Oakland A's 1927 New York Yankees 1935 Detroit Tigers 1983 Baltimore Orioles Woodson Division: 1970 Baltimore Orioles 1968 Detroit Tigers 1911 Philadelphia A's 1961 New York Yankees Payton Division: 1930 Philadelphia A's 1946 Boston Red Sox 1954 Cleveland Indians 1991 Minnesota Twins 1998 New York Yankees National League: Jordan Division: 2001 Arizona Diamondbacks 1904 New York Giants 1957 Milwaukee Braves 1975 Cincinatti Reds 1986 New York Mets Singletary Division: 1904 Chicago Cubs 1934 St. Louis Cardinals 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers 1986 Houston Astros 1995 Atlanta Braves Carter Divsion: 1940 Cincinatti Reds 1954 New York Giants 1969 New York Mets 1980 Philadelphia Phillies 1985 St. Louis Cardinals 1995 Cleveland Indians *95 Indians are in NL to make leagues have even #s I will control the '86 Mets. No DH in either league - Not sure how I'm going to handle the minors yet - any suggestions? Also, one question: I know how to dl ballpark pics - but how do I get ballpark figures for old parks like the Polo Grounds. Any helpers? This should be a fun league - stop in and check out the progress!! Last edited by lgkeeper; 11-03-2002 at 11:57 PM. |

Mets Fall to '06 Cubs in Champion's League opener
NEW YORK - Johnny Kling's one-out hit in the top of the 11th inning pushed the '06 Cubs past the '86 Mets 3-2 yesterday on opening night of the Champion's League. Mordecai Brown and Dwight Gooden locked horns - as many aces did around the league - but the game was decided in extra innings on Kling's knock of Met reliver Doug Sisk. Jimmy Sheckard got the league off to a fast start. The Cub leadoff hitter bombed Gooden's first pitch over the leftfield wall to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead. The Cubs would get a second run in the inning on a Gary Carter passed ball. The Mets answered in the bottom of the second, when Lenny Dykstra scored on an error and Gooden hit a sac-fly. The game stayed knotted until Kling's single in the eleventh. "It's not good that our only RBI came from our pitcher," Mets manager Dwight Gooden said. "But the season is about as young as they come right now." Notes - Denny McClain pitched a 1-hit shutout against Maris, Mantle and the '61 Yanks...Everyone's pick to win it all - the '27 Yanks - dropped their opener to the '01 Mariners - 4-1. ***Of course I'm not going to report game-by-game on here. I usually report the first few games then go to week-by-week unless things get interesting. But this league is fun, so who knows?*** Last edited by lgkeeper; 11-04-2002 at 12:35 PM. |

Pfiester is Pfabulous, Shutsdown Mets
NEW YORK - Jack Pfiester shut down the Mets in a brilliant performance, as the Cubs won their second straight, 2-1. Pfiester threw 8.2 innings of 5-hit ball before yielding to his closer in the ninth. For the second straight night, the Mets were unable to must up runs. The only Met RBI came on a Gary Carter single. "It's just 2 games, but I'm not pleased with our approach at the plate," Mets manager Davey Johnson said. "Hopefully we'll get thing going tomorrow night." Mets starter Bobby Ojeda (0-1) pitched well, allowing just 2 runs in 8 innings. But the lack of run support hurt the Mets starting staff for the second straight outing. The '86 Mets and '06 Cubs will end their 3-game series tomorrow night. Notes - Tom Glavine ('95 Braves) will miss 6-7 weeks with a pulled bicep muscle. |

Cubs Blank Mets...Again
NEW YORK - The New York Mets probably wanted a police escort so the '06 Cubs could get back to the airport and get out of town as quickly as possible. For the third straight night, the Cubs shut down the Mets in a 4-0 blanking by starter Ed Reulbach. Reulback allowed just 6 hits in the win. In the 3-game series, the Mets musterd just 3 runs and 19 hits against the well-armed Cubs. The Mets will host the '34 Cardinals in the opener of the 3-game set tomorrow night. Notes: Mickey Mantle ('61 Yanks) hit a 504-foot homer off of Mike Flanagan ('83 O's) yesterday...The '98 Yanks pulled off the first trade of the young season, sending RP Mike Stanton to the '57 Braves for LF Andy Pafko and 3B Harry Hanebrink...Hank Aaron ('57 Braves) injured his back and is day-to-day but may miss up to 3 weeks. |

Mets' Bats Break Out, Thump Cards
NEW YORK - After 3 frustrating nights of being baffled by Chicago pitchers, the New York Mets got out their aggression on the '34 Cardinals yesterday in an 11-3 whooping. Howard Johnson 5 RBI and 3 hits - including a grand slam. Keith Hernandez went 4-5 on the night and Kevin Mitchell added 3 hits and 2 RBI. "It's nice to finally get our offense going," Hernandez said. "Let's hope this is the pace we keep up." Mets starter Ron Darling pitched well, allowing just one earned run in six and a third. Randy Myers came on to get the final 8 outs. |

Mets get 2nd straight behind Ags
NEW YORK - After 3 straight losses to open the season, the '86 Mets are starting to find their form. They won their second game of the season, 5-2 over the '34 Cardinals yesterday. Rick Aguilera pitched 7 quality innings, surrendering just two runs on seven hits. Roger McDowell picked up his first save of the young season. The player fans predicted would carry the Mets, Darryl Strawberry, finally broke out of an early slump, collecting 2 hits and driving in a pair in the win. Notes: Only 2 teams remain undefeated - the '06 Cubs and the '35 Tigers. Also, their are only 2 winless teams - the '73 A's and the '01 Diamondbacks...Mickey Mantle ('61 Yanks) is the hottest hitter of the early season, hitting 5 HR with 12 RBI in his first 5 games. |

Doc beats Dizzy; Mets win 3rd straight!
NEW YORK - Doc Gooden tossed a 4-hit shutout as the '86 Mets swept the '34 Cardinals in a 5-0 victory yesterday. Gooden (1-0) outpitched Cards starter Dizzy Dean (1-1) but Dean was victimized by 5 St. Louis errors resulting in 3 unearned runs. "You can't have defense like that and win ballgames," Dean said. The Mets once again relied on small ball for the win. They stole 3 bases, had a sac fly and 2 sac bunts. The Mets have hit just 2 homeruns all season. New York will travel to Milwaukee to face Eddie Matthews and the '57 Braves. Notes: Braves star Hank Aaron will actually not play in the series. He was placed on the disabled list with a strained back...The Braves are 2-4 on the season. |

O'Connell's blast sinks Mets
MILWAUKEE - Danny O'Connell's two-out, two-run homer lifted the '57 Braves over the '86 Mets yesterday. O'Connell, pinch-hitting for pitcher Ernie Johnson, pulled a Jesse Orosco curve down the right-field line for the game-winner. The Mets had come back from a 5-2 deficit to take the lead with a 4-run seventh inning. But Orosco's hanger proved to be the difference. "It just didn't break," Orsoco said. "I knew as soon as I let it go that it was going to be trouble." The Mets doubled their season long homerun output in just one inning when both Gary Carter and Keith Hernandez went deep in the seventh. |

Hank who? Matthews' beats Mets
MILWAUKEE - For the second straight night, the '86 Mets were beaten by a pinch-hit homer. Lastnight, though, it wasn't no-name Danny O'Connell. It was Hall-of-Famer Eddie Matthews. Matthews, hitting for starting pitcher Gene Conley, hit a one-out 2-2 pitch over the right field wall 451 feet away from home plate. Sid Fernandez (0-2) had only allowed three hits in the game prior to Matthews homer as both pitchers took shutouts into the last of the ninth. Fernandez now drops his second straight start and still has a 1.76 era. "It's tough to pitch so well and not get any run support," Fernandez said. "I know they're trying, but you can't expect our staff to play an entire game without mistakes. We have to be perfect right now to win and I wasn't perfect today." "I know Sid is frustrated," Mets manager Davey Johnson said, "and he wants to win. We just have to figure out what's wrong. Maybe make some changes." |

Mets drop third in a row; look for answers
MILWAUKEE - The '86 Mets suffered their second sweep of the season in a 5-2 loss to the '57 Milwaukee Braves yesterday. Bob Hazle provided all the offense the Braves would need, hitting two home runs and reaching base safely 4 times. Ron Darling (1-1) took the loss. "I'm not sure what is wrong," Mets manager Davey Johnson said. "But something has to change quickly." |

Hey, I was reading it! I'm curious to see how it goes... plus, as a lifelong Red Sox fan, it's nice to see the '86 Mets getting their butts handed to them!

lg,
Maybe monthly updates would work... I mean, do I really care that Wally Backman went 0-3 with a groundout to second in last night's game? |

Since you didn't want to see Backman's results - I decided to put Teufel in and see how he did...the result?
Teufel busts out in big NY win ATLANTA - Tim Teufel made the most of his opporunity. The second-baseman, inserted in the starting lineup yesterday for the struggling Wally Backman - drove in seven runs in a 4-5 performance to lead the '86 Mets past the '95 Braves 11-0. Teufel hit a grand slam in the 3rd inning off of Braves starter Jason Schmidt. Then, after a 48 minute rain delay that wiped Schmidt out along with Mets starter Ron Darling, Teufel stayed hot, driving in a run in each of his next 3 at-bats. "He's a great role player who will take advantage of every opportunity," Mets GM Trent Sano said. "We needed this today." Overshadowed by Teufel's performance was the relief job by Randy Myers. Myers took over for Darling and pitched 5 inning of no-hit ball, striking out 5 and walking just one. Myers (1-2) overmatched the Braves - allowing just 2 balls to leave the outfield. "He was really on today," Mets catcher Gary Carter said. "They had no idea what to expect from him." Code:

Two questions:
Tim Teufel? I thought that guy was a figment of my imagination. Did Carter still have the permullet in '86? |
