When baseball was just a game

I have finally decided that I'm going to get through one of these things if its the last thing I do. I have a good feeling about this one. I really do. In this version, we will closely follow what really happened in Major League Baseball up until the free agency era. With nothing else to say lets get on with it.

1903 World Series

Game 1

AT

New York (A) 1, New York (N) 0 - A pitcher's duel from the start. Both Harry Howell and Christy Mathewson shut out the opposing team. In the top of the tenth, the Giants decided to pinch hit for Mathewson, but the plan backfired. In the bottom of the tenth, Chauncey Fisher gave up three hits, including Bill Keister's game winning single.

Game 2

AT

New York (N) 19, New York (A) 3 - What a horrible game for 20 game winner Stan Yerkes. In two innings of work, Yerkes gave up 11 earned runs on 13 hits. Crazy Schmit came into the game in the third inning, and proceeded to give up 2 earned runs on 3 hits. Ike Butler came into the game and finally got the Highlanders out of the third inning. The Giants scored 16 runs in the first three innings, and that was obviously all that Red Ames needed to secure a victory for the Giants.

Game 3

New York (N) 6, New York (A) 2 - Another strong pitching performance from the Giants starting rotation. 20 game winner Ed Doheny shut down the Highlanders, giving up one earned run on three hits as the Giants defeated the Highlanders 6-2.

Game 4

AT

New York (A) 7, New York (N) 2 - The Giants still can't figure out Harry Howell. The defending AL Pitcher of the Year baffled the Giants' hitter, giving up one earned run and scattering twelve hits. Christy Mathewson struggled today, giving up seven runs on eleven hits.

Game 5

AT

New York (A) 3, New York (N) 2 - Stan Yerkes game five start was totally different from his game two starts. After getting hammered back to the stone age in Game two, Yerkes was masterful in game five, giving up two runs on five hits as the Highlanders defeated the Giants 3-2.

Game 6

AT

New York (N) 8, New York (A) 1 - A pivotal game for the Giants as Ed Doheny put a stop to the string of bad outings from the Giants rotation. Doheny gave up one run on six hits as the Giants defeat the Highlanders 8-1. Amazingly, all of the Giants thirteen hits were base hits, but four stolen bases and some timely hitting led to the eight runs.

Game 7

AT

New York (N) 4, New York (A) 2 - Christy Mathewson regained the form he had in game one while the Giants were finally able to solve Harry Howell a bit. Mathewson gave up one earned run on five hits as the Giants defeated the Highlanders 4-2 and are one win away from winning the first World Series.

Game 8

AT

New York (N) 9, New York (A) 4 - Because of the scheduling, both managers were forced to go with pitchers who would be making their first start in the postseason. The Highlanders went with rookie Barney Wolfe, who went 14-13 with a 4.30 ERA in 29 starts. The Giants decided to go with veteran Roger Denzer instead of Dummy Taylor. Taylor had won 17 games for the Giants during the regular season, but decided to go with Denzer, who had only made one start this season, but did have a 1.76 ERA coming out of the bullpen. Danny Murphy provided all the offense the Giants would need, as he went 4 for 5 with a double, a triple, and two runs batted in, while Denzer gave up four runs on ten hits as the Giants defeat the Highlanders 9-4 to win the 1903 World Series. Wolfe gave up five earned runs on sixteen hits, but three errors by the defense led to four unearned runs scoring.

Both Harry Howell and Christy Mathewson shut out the opposing team. In the top of the tenth, the Giants decided to pinch hit for Mathewson, but the plan backfired. In the bottom of the tenth, Chauncey Fisher gave up three hits, including Bill Keister's game winning single. Game 2 AT New York (N) 19, New York (A) 3 - What a horrible game for 20 game winner Stan Yerkes. In two innings of work, Yerkes gave up 11 earned runs on 13 hits. Crazy Schmit came into the game in the third inning, and proceeded to give up 2 earned runs on 3 hits. Ike Butler came into the game and finally got the Highlanders out of the third inning. The Giants scored 16 runs in the first three innings, and that was obviously all that Red Ames needed to secure a victory for the Giants. Game 3 AT New York (N) 6, New York (A) 2 - Another strong pitching performance from the Giants starting rotation. 20 game winner Ed Doheny shut down the Highlanders, giving up one earned run on three hits as the Giants defeated the Highlanders 6-2. Game 4 AT New York (A) 7, New York (N) 2 - The Giants still can't figure out Harry Howell. The defending AL Pitcher of the Year baffled the Giants' hitter, giving up one earned run and scattering twelve hits. Christy Mathewson struggled today, giving up seven runs on eleven hits. Game 5 AT New York (A) 3, New York (N) 2 - Stan Yerkes game five start was totally different from his game two starts. After getting hammered back to the stone age in Game two, Yerkes was masterful in game five, giving up two runs on five hits as the Highlanders defeated the Giants 3-2. Game 6 AT New York (N) 8, New York (A) 1 - A pivotal game for the Giants as Ed Doheny put a stop to the string of bad outings from the Giants rotation. Doheny gave up one run on six hits as the Giants defeat the Highlanders 8-1. Amazingly, all of the Giants thirteen hits were base hits, but four stolen bases and some timely hitting led to the eight runs. Game 7 AT New York (N) 4, New York (A) 2 - Christy Mathewson regained the form he had in game one while the Giants were finally able to solve Harry Howell a bit. Mathewson gave up one earned run on five hits as the Giants defeated the Highlanders 4-2 and are one win away from winning the first World Series. Game 8 AT New York (N) 9, New York (A) 4 - Because of the scheduling, both managers were forced to go with pitchers who would be making their first start in the postseason. The Highlanders went with rookie Barney Wolfe, who went 14-13 with a 4.30 ERA in 29 starts. The Giants decided to go with veteran Roger Denzer instead of Dummy Taylor. Taylor had won 17 games for the Giants during the regular season, but decided to go with Denzer, who had only made one start this season, but did have a 1.76 ERA coming out of the bullpen. Danny Murphy provided all the offense the Giants would need, as he went 4 for 5 with a double, a triple, and two runs batted in, while Denzer gave up four runs on ten hits as the Giants defeat the Highlanders 9-4 to win the 1903 World Series. Wolfe gave up five earned runs on sixteen hits, but three errors by the defense led to four unearned runs scoring. How The Giants Won...
