I used to "know" former Orioles catcher Chris Hoiles.

My mom used to run her own babysitting business, and the father's of one of the children happened to do some work for Hoiles. I went to the ball game a few times with him, and we'd go down to the dugout and chat with Chris before the game. Anytime we did that, we'd also sit in his personal seats right behind home plate.

That's the closest I've ever come to knowing a professional athlete, or to having a professional athlete know me.

I had a teacher in school that played for the Dallas Cowboys when they won all those Super Bowls, and actually had the rings to prove it. For the life of me I can't place that guy's name, but if I can remember it, I'll post it.

Dola,

On second thought, I forgot his name, but he had an ok career in the majors if I remember. My dad played baseball with his older brother growing up. They were pretty good friends. My uncle also was offered a minor league deal for the Pirates, but turned it down. He was always pretty good.

Hmm. Like several people here, I've known plenty of former and current pro athletes. While they've mostly been in baseball, quite possibly the one who had the biggest impact on me was when I was a very young boy was Jesse Owens. I was never before and have never since been in such awe of a man (well, besides my dad who's another pretty cool guy).

PS - I'll also mention that another favorite as a kid was a one-time Cleveland Indian (who shall remain nameless to protect the guilty) who taught me every single sign and indicator used by the third and first base coaches. All my friends thought I was psychic

Well, my dad played golf with Jesse Owens I guess. But he certainly wouldn't remember him even if he was alive.

I knew Billy Ashley, former Dodger defensive stalwart.

LeBron James and I are like peas and carrots, as well. Call him and ask. He'll tell ya!

My grandfather was offered a contract by the Red Sox back in the late 40's, but he was making more money as an electrician at the time so he turned it down. The only other athlete I know is David Patton who was my neighbor growing up and was drafted in the 12th round last year by the Rockies.

Other than that, I know a few swimmers (if you consider swimming a sport) such as Megan Quann, but that's about it.

I don't know anyone that would not consider swimming a sport.

Michael Young's wife knows me... US gold medalist swimmer Cristina Teuscher would know me... Perhaps Marcellus Wiley would recognize me, but probably not... I think that's about it for me. Anyone find a theme here?

Did a Laura Rusignoal precede you in that position in last year or 2 years ago?
