How Long Will Julio Franco Play?

Will he be the oldest position player in history?

Will he be the oldest viable position player in history?

This thread inspired by Mr. Franco's pinch hit grand slam today.

Or yesterday you mean.

I honestly don't know. He obviously still has some use, but LaRoche needs more time against lefties to see if he can actually hit them. If he still wants to play, why not a couple more seasons? Is 50 out of the question? How old is he really?

He will play until his heart explodes at the age of 49.

He's still got 20-30 more years in him.

65...

Doh, apparently his real birth certificate was just discovered and he is 67 - so he could not have retired two years ago and still be playing.

71!

Franco's career EQA is .278. It's currently sitting at .277. He posted a .282 mark last year, and .284 the year before. The man is a marvel.

More amazing is that he made a comeback at such an advanced age after missing pretty much three full seasons from 1998-2000.

He'll be playing til he starts collecting Social Security checks, or until he breaks his hip in a fall.

The guy keeps himself in great shape. It's really impressive that his reflexes are still fast enough to play on the MLB level.

Especially when you consider that he starts from an unusual batting stance and uses one of the heaviest bats in the majors leagues. He's adjusted by hitting almost everything to right field. He's almost an anti-pull hitter these days and I'm kind of surprised more teams don't put anti-pull shifts on against him.

Really it's not that much a comeback. He played 1998 in Japan with the same team he played the 1995 season with, and 1999 & 2001 in Mexico (He did miss 2000 not sure why though, did he get injured?). 1998 he hit .290 in Japan, and he hit .423 in Mexico in 1999 and was hitting .437 in 2001 before getting signed by the Braves.

I dunno. Spending three years in the equivalent of the minors and then reviving an MLB career after such a gap at age 42. That is pretty impressive. But, your point that he wasn't on siesta during this span is well-taken. I missed the '95 gap in his MLB career. If Franco had spent those four years playing in the bigs, his Cooperstown resume might be more convincing to the voters.

I say until he breaks his hip climbing out of the dugout. Either that or until he turns 60 and Medicare won't cover his cortisone shots anymore.
