Sim Eighteen, 2012

9/21 - 3-2 WIN vs DC - Ward hit a solo shot (3) and Lust hit a 2-run homer (7) as Skip Burns K'd 11 in 7.2 innings to pick up his 13th win. Bill Rapier notched his 23rd save.
9/22 - 6-4 WIN vs DC - Chris Curcio pitched well and survived poor defensive play to win his 13th game. Curcio allowed 4 runs (1 ER) on 7 hits in 8 innings, and Rapier pitched a perfect 9th for save #24. Young SS Leon Rego hit a pair of doubles, Lust homered (8) for the second straight day, and Bick Horizon finally hit his 30th homer to power the offense.
9/23 - Off Day
9/24 - 4-0 WIN @ Massachusetts - Lowell Stang pitched a shutout for the 3rd time this year and 15th time in his career, allowing just 3 hits along the way. Lust was 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI, and Bick Horizon stole his 1st base of the season.
9/25 - 7-5 loss @ Massachusetts - Hector Moreno was hammered for 5 ER on 4 hits in just two thirds of an inning, but we came back to tie the game at 5. Then Mikey Welch allowed a run in his 3.2 innings of work to take the loss. Former Penn prospect Ronnie Walker Jr. drove in 5 runs against us. Commons and Trosclair each had a pair of hits for us.
9/26 - 6-2 WIN @ Massachusetts - Skip Burns was injured and will miss 1-2 weeks! But, Joseph Melbourne came in and pitched 4 innnings of no-hit ball in releif, and we still win the game. Lust, Commons and Horizon each had a pair of hits, with Horizon's 31st homer, a 3-run shot, being the highlight. Anthony Pooler added 3 singles and his 50th RBI. It is his first 50-RBI season in his 13-year career.
9/27 - 3-1 WIN @ New York - Hults returns from injury to hold the Barons to just 1 ER on 8 hits in 7 innings, and Rapier nails down his 25th save. Trosclair had an RBI double, and Brett Ward hit his 2nd homer of the sim and 4th of the season.
9/28 - 7-5 WIN @ New York - Chris Curcio allowed 1 ER on 8 hits in 6 innings, but the bullpen tried to give the game away. Eventually, Rapier got the final out an picked up his 26th save. Salguero earned his 10th win with a scoreless inning and a third. Horizon had a homer (32) and 3 RBI (115), and Chris Trosclair hit his 8th homer as well.
9/29 - 9-1 WIN @ New York - Manny Talamantez was 2-for-4 with a 2-run homer (15) and 2 runs scored, and Brett Ward was 2-for-4 with 3 RBI. C-Mart made a bid for the post-season roster with a 2-for-3, 3 R, 2 RBI day. However, his .139 average may keep him off the squad. Lowell Stang didn't allow a run for the 3rd start in a row, lowering his ERA to 1.96. He was 2 outs away from the shutout when he was pulled. Reliever Adam Guerrero allowed a 9th inning homer.
9/30 - 2-1 WIN @ Maryland - Ward, Chipman and Thom each had 2 hits for Pennsylvania. Moreno allowed 1 ER on 2 hits in 6 innings, and 4 relievers held Maryland scoreless from then on. Rapier got his 27th save.

This is the first time since '02 NY will not be in the postseason, so yeah, they have kind of owned the league...

Surprisingly, the Barons snagged only 1 National Cup in their 9 playoff appearances.

I don't know if Brian is planning on resting Yim or letting him pitch against us, but right now he's tied with Stang, Mississippi's Ryan Turner and Louisiana's Scott Bartell for the league lead with 19 wins. Here's a comparison between Stang and Yim:

Who would you give the Walter Johnson Award to? Stang has a lower ERA, has allowed fewer homers and has 31 QS compared to Yim's 30, but Yim has more than twice as many K's and a lower WHIP.

I'd have to give the nod to Yim right now, but it would be a decision that could change if you asked tomorrow. They're too close to be distinguished from each other.

Congrats Chappy! A nice sim to go out on and maybe will give the team some added momentum going into the playoffs.

As for the WJ Award, it's awfully close. Maryland did win the division, so Yim gets bonus points there. I might have to flip a coin.

Nice Chappy...that one bad sim (2 sims ago?) had me a little worried....but you really pulled it out in the end.

I'm undecided on whose going to play and whose going to sit. I know any player who is prone is not playing....but....I want one more win...I'm stuck on 99 right now....going for a Yim 20th win is also tempting. I still remember however the broken wrist that Norman Bates (he was there when I got the team hehe)...in september after I'd already clenched a playoff spot...

as fas as Walter Johnson award...they are extremely close in wins, ERA, QS ect...however...

Is where Stang loses my vote (that and Yim is one of my players). If you only vote by ERA and Wins...than it is close...and you might give the edge to Stang for his 0.11 advantage in ERA. However, if you are voting on the pitchers stats ect...the only catagory Stang is superior in is HR allowed (Yim 0.5 to Stang 0.2).

You know, it's risky, but something to consider is that if you bench him for too long, he could go cold. I remember in the old JL, I benched all of my starters after the Browns (ah, the Browns) clinched the division with about a week left to play. When I hit the playoffs, *every single one* of my stars were ice cold (all blues on the lineup screen) and I just barely squeaked through the LCS because of it.

That said, I'd probably bench Horizon, Commons, and your staff, too, with only three games left to play. They're wayyyyyyy too valuable to lose to injury...

Thats been one of the things I've tinkered with most this season....the guys ahead of him...primarily Norman Bates has had an off year....I've tried combinations of Dillard, Wooten, VanWormer, Bates. I had been batting Walker 3rd and Petrillo 4th for a few seasons but it seemed Petrillo average kept sliding every years, maybe the AI pitching around him with lesser protection. While Petrillo leads in SLG, OPS, HR (14 more than the #2 guy), Runs (thanks to great season by Thomas Walker )...he's only 3 up in RBIs by 3...

Just can't seem to get any consistent production from my lead off and #3 hitters.

Bick has had an off year, but with Ward and Commons both in the top 10 in OBP and Lust not to shabby at .356, Horizon couldn't help but drive in 100 runs. Of course, Commons hasn't been in front of them all year long, so he's gathered a lot of those ribbies in the 2nd half- in fact, Horizon drove in the most runs in September (26), where he hit a season low .216...

Wow...yeah he did come down a bit from his great 2010-11 seasons...The weird thing..after looking at last years cato history pages and this years league/pitching reports...it felt like there was more offense this season...but it really wasn't that offensive of a year..

Maybe it was just Petrillo having 50 homers and Yim's ERA rising from 1.36 to 2.07...but looking at the ERA and AVG for the leagues a few years ago...this season the offensive numbers were down compared to the 2005-2009 time frame.

Sim Nineteen

10/1 - 1-0 loss @ Maryland - James Yim won his 20th against us, allowing 3 hits in 8 innings. Alphonse Nietz matched wits with him for 7, allowing 0 ER on 3 hits. Reliever Joel Salguero allowed the losing run in the bottom of the 8th. Viktor Tay was 0-for-2 with a strikeout.
10/2 - 5-3 loss @ Maryland - In his 26th career at bat, Viktor Tay delivered a 2-out, 2-run homer. Unfortunately, we lost the game. Starter Michael Wilmot allowed 5 ER on 6 hits in just 3.2 innings to fall to 1-3 and most certainly lose his spot on the postseason roster.
10/3 - 4-3 loss @ Maryland - Northrup falls to 0-4 by allowing 4 ER on 5 hits in 6.2 innings. At this point, I'm not sure if Tracey will make the postseason roster. But, he is our lone lefty in the bullpen... Trosclair (9) and Tally (16) each homered, and Galyon was 2-for-3 in the loss.

I shrunk my staff down to 10. Everyone is rested and their are plenty of off-days, so I'm not worried about fatigue and I want to have my best available arms out there at all times. I also wanted a little more flexibility in my lineup, and I needed to take away the 11th pitcher to do that.

Young Leon Rego came out of nowhere and played his way onto the postseason roster. Also, surprisingly, C-Mart made it. Our batting order is very top-heavy, and low on power, but the bottom three have come through for us frequently this season.

Pennsylvania VS Virginia

On offense, the Freedom and the Cannons are very similar teams. Both teams have one key player who is expected to hit homers - Bick Horizon for the Freedom and Vernon Castanon for the Cannons. The rest of the offensive output is reliant on taking walks and chipping away with singles and doubles. Niether team likes to steal bases. Overall, their offensive numbers are pretty close:

Pennsylvania and Virginia are polar opposites when it comes to pitching. The Freedom are stacked with starters who can shut down the opposition - the best way to beat us is to strike late in the game when the starters are tired and the suspect bullpen takes the mound. However, Virginia possesses a sub-par rotation and an excellent bullpen. We must jump on the Cannons early, because they seldom can be beat late in the game. Here are a look at the pitching totals:

Chappy Hall Of Famer Join Date: Dec 2001 Location: Raleigh, NC Posts: 2,721	Sim Eighteen, 2012 9/21 - 3-2 WIN vs DC - Ward hit a solo shot (3) and Lust hit a 2-run homer (7) as Skip Burns K'd 11 in 7.2 innings to pick up his 13th win. Bill Rapier notched his 23rd save. 9/22 - 6-4 WIN vs DC - Chris Curcio pitched well and survived poor defensive play to win his 13th game. Curcio allowed 4 runs (1 ER) on 7 hits in 8 innings, and Rapier pitched a perfect 9th for save #24. Young SS Leon Rego hit a pair of doubles, Lust homered (8) for the second straight day, and Bick Horizon finally hit his 30th homer to power the offense. 9/23 - Off Day 9/24 - 4-0 WIN @ Massachusetts - Lowell Stang pitched a shutout for the 3rd time this year and 15th time in his career, allowing just 3 hits along the way. Lust was 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI, and Bick Horizon stole his 1st base of the season. 9/25 - 7-5 loss @ Massachusetts - Hector Moreno was hammered for 5 ER on 4 hits in just two thirds of an inning, but we came back to tie the game at 5. Then Mikey Welch allowed a run in his 3.2 innings of work to take the loss. Former Penn prospect Ronnie Walker Jr. drove in 5 runs against us. Commons and Trosclair each had a pair of hits for us. 9/26 - 6-2 WIN @ Massachusetts - Skip Burns was injured and will miss 1-2 weeks! But, Joseph Melbourne came in and pitched 4 innnings of no-hit ball in releif, and we still win the game. Lust, Commons and Horizon each had a pair of hits, with Horizon's 31st homer, a 3-run shot, being the highlight. Anthony Pooler added 3 singles and his 50th RBI. It is his first 50-RBI season in his 13-year career. 9/27 - 3-1 WIN @ New York - Hults returns from injury to hold the Barons to just 1 ER on 8 hits in 7 innings, and Rapier nails down his 25th save. Trosclair had an RBI double, and Brett Ward hit his 2nd homer of the sim and 4th of the season. 9/28 - 7-5 WIN @ New York - Chris Curcio allowed 1 ER on 8 hits in 6 innings, but the bullpen tried to give the game away. Eventually, Rapier got the final out an picked up his 26th save. Salguero earned his 10th win with a scoreless inning and a third. Horizon had a homer (32) and 3 RBI (115), and Chris Trosclair hit his 8th homer as well. 9/29 - 9-1 WIN @ New York - Manny Talamantez was 2-for-4 with a 2-run homer (15) and 2 runs scored, and Brett Ward was 2-for-4 with 3 RBI. C-Mart made a bid for the post-season roster with a 2-for-3, 3 R, 2 RBI day. However, his .139 average may keep him off the squad. Lowell Stang didn't allow a run for the 3rd start in a row, lowering his ERA to 1.96. He was 2 outs away from the shutout when he was pulled. Reliever Adam Guerrero allowed a 9th inning homer. 9/30 - 2-1 WIN @ Maryland - Ward, Chipman and Thom each had 2 hits for Pennsylvania. Moreno allowed 1 ER on 2 hits in 6 innings, and 4 relievers held Maryland scoreless from then on. Rapier got his 27th save. A nice sim to go out on and maybe will give the team some added momentum going into the playoffs. As for the WJ Award, it's awfully close. I'm undecided on whose going to play and whose going to sit. I know any player who is prone is not playing....but....I want one more win...I'm stuck on 99 right now....going for a Yim 20th win is also tempting. I still remember however the broken wrist that Norman Bates (he was there when I got the team hehe)...in september after I'd already clenched a playoff spot... as fas as Walter Johnson award...they are extremely close in wins, ERA, QS ect...however... Code: R/9 H/9 K/9 BB/9 Yim 6.4 5.5 9.7 0.9 Stang 8.6 7.2 4.2 1.1 Is where Stang loses my vote (that and Yim is one of my players). If you only vote by ERA and Wins...than it is close...and you might give the edge to Stang for his 0.11 advantage in ERA. Of course, Commons hasn't been in front of them all year long, so he's gathered a lot of those ribbies in the 2nd half- in fact, Horizon drove in the most runs in September (26), where he hit a season low .216... Both teams have one key player who is expected to hit homers - Bick Horizon for the Freedom and Vernon Castanon for the Cannons. The rest of the offensive output is reliant on taking walks and chipping away with singles and doubles. Niether team likes to steal bases. However, Virginia possesses a sub-par rotation and an excellent bullpen. We must jump on the Cannons early, because they seldom can be beat late in the game.
