You don't have to. Like I said, this is not a suggestion for a new game engine. If so, then yes you would have to. Rather, this is a cosmetic change, there's no dependance needed. However, you could do it for hitters as well, but I think it's more relevant for pitchers.

Scary thought on how far you could take this.

"Player XX has improved his ability on spotting outside sliders that will end up outside the strike zone."
"Player XX has improved his ability to throw the 3-2 changeup for a strike"

I just wanted to bump this because I still feel very strongly that this would really heighten the feel of the development system.

But to reiterate. My thought is ONLY focused on the development of pitchers, not at all related to the pbp engine. You can leave all that alone and still make the changes I'm proposing to the best of my knowledge. You just create splits for each pitch, have a formula that takes those ratings and spits out weighted splits and viola, you have the same pbp engine, but now you get a pitch-by-pitch development model which is much more akin to how actual pitchers develop.

I think it would be pretty hard to re-work the engine just to give us more rating categories to worry about. Im really happy with only having to look over the three rating categories that ootp uses now. pitch ratings would just add clutter and make you have to balance the value of all of these pitches against one another. i just think it would be to hard to say that just because a pitchers curveball breaks more or is thrown faster he is better. mark redman and josh fogg are among many pitchers who dont throw great pitches but get batters out and its just gotta be so much simpler to just rate them more generally than specifically. believe me, when you get too specific with the ratings it starts to mess up the stats and they arent as accurate to real life as they would be otherwise. just dont ask for too much change to aspects of the game that work prefect as it is.
