For Better or Worse . . . I'm BACK! First up - Fighter Ratings

Hello to all the veterans and welcome to all the newcomers to these Forums. I hope you have all been well. Rather than bore you with my personal tales of triumph and woes, let's get right to the business of boxing, specifically, Title Bout boxing!

For all of you interested in what fighters are going to be included in the new, upcoming version of Title Bout, here's what I hope will be a comprehensive explanation of what it taking place:

1. The TOP FIFTY current fighters per division as listed by www.boxrec.com will be included. Now, that doesn't mean that they'll be rated in accordance with the ranking of that excellent site, only that they will be in the database. Our official ratings and rankings often differ from the approach taken at boxrec.

2. I have taken a huge, sharp scythe to the fighter database and winnowed out the chaft, deleting literally hundreds of fighters who were simply cannon fodder (replacing them with NEW cannon fodder).

3. I have moved all the fighters who are currently listed as either "retired" or "inactive" to the retired setting if they deserved to be kept in the official database. Won-lost record or past excellence was not necessarily the only criteria to qualify for inclusion. Long-time trial horses and gatekeepers also remained as part of the database.

These fighters need re-rated, along with some of the fighters who have been retired since the game began (as more information becomes available on these fighters or hindsight changes the perspective of certain fighters, adjustments do need to be made). The Archive/Retire database will be made available as a free download shortly after the release of the next version of Title Bout.

4. Of course, when the next version of Title Bout debuts, it will include, not only all the newly rated current fighters (see #1) but also all the original retired fighters. I just wanted to clarify that in case I confused the issue in #3.

Here's a good example of the process I am currently using: Charles Brewer, a wonderful fighter's fighter, recently announced his retirement. He will NOT appear among the "active" fighters nor will he appear among the retired fighters . . . just yet. He WILL appear, rated in his prime, in the free download that will follow the new version of the game.

OKAY, just a bit more "teasing" (and all with Andreas' blessing - poor guy, I usually get him in so much trouble! )

1. NO release date is being officially announced; however, I will not post on these forums unless I am sure that the information is accurate and timely and a harbinger of soon-to-come announcements.

2. Fight Manager (the boxing role-playing game) is still in development; it is not close to being forgotten or cast aside. However, it is also not close to being released. First, we wanted to revisit Title Bout and improve it; second, Fight Manager continues to undergo philosophical changes and is, to say the least, a huge project.

3. New features in the upcoming Title Bout -

a) The best cut/swelling modules bar none. Cuts can now occur in 16 locations and range anywhere from a nick to a severe cut. However, fights will NOT be stopped nearly as often as in the past, although their actual affect on the fighter will be more pronounced. More than ever, the between rounds work will be crucial.

Swelling will also have a major impact on performance, although again, a stoppage due to swelling will not occur with any frequency. Swelling can be controlled but, unlike cuts that can be completely closed, won't "go away" - the problem might get worse but if swelling begins, it will remain.

b) Dramatically improved commentary - easily 400 lines of new dialogue, most of it logic commentary to improve the transition of events (i.e. referee leading a fighter to the ring side doctor, then back into the fight), or to create a better sense of what is taking place in the ring. Other commentary will add more color and still other commentary has been changed or eliminated to provide more accuracy and less contradiction.

c) Head-to-head "play" when using the betting module. Now you and a friend can compete by starting with the same purse, betting on fights on the Fight Card in an attemp to be the first to use his ring saavy to amass a pre-determined amount of money.

d) A completely revamped "between rounds" screen that will permit maximum interaction if you wish to work the corner.

e) Improved Tournament play. 32-man (maybe 64-man) double-elimination options.

f) Some graphic improvements, GUI improvements - similar look but sharper and cleaner with improved management interface.

g) Andreas' pride and joy: a complete history revision, more complete, more versatile, etc.

. . . and a dozen more features that I've forgotten.

I'll be posting again very soon - tomorrow or Sunday - with more news.

Fantastic stuff, Jim. Any one of those elements is an exciting development to an already great game. As a package it should be a terrific buy.

Please make sure to improve the keyboard support, as it kills me to have to stop playing TBCB because of its mouse intensiveness. (*Stop as in "stop playing for the evening" not stop playing the game altogether)

Thanks for the update. Everyone is looking forward to a great game getting even better. Between OOTP Developments and all of the extras created by this gaming community, this game has come a long way since its humble beginnings.

You've got your work cut out for you Jim, just in the SMW division alone 19 out of the top 50 weren't rated at all and who knows how many weren't in the original database.

This should be an impressive addition of boxers, looking forward to it.

Looking forward to seeing where you rate Valuev and how low you rate Shelton, along with several others.

Sounds great. I hope Danny Williams stays in the top 50. I guess a present day Mike Tyson is out.

A present day Mike Tyson will be ekeing out a living selling designer prison clothes and soap-on-a-rope-for-a-dope.

What I suspect they'll do is create a rating for him in the prime years and maybe an overall career. Ali's got three.

Considering Williams is 18th and his next fight is against Skelton who is 14th, even a loss shouldn't drop him out of the Top 50.

Just curious, James. Will there be any new audio goodies in TBCB2?

That was another poke at Tysonfan82 by me. I know that Danny Williams is his favorite fighter.
