Can we run 6.12 and 6.5 separately?

Given that there is always something a bit different in the new versions in terms of statistical outcomes, I would like to test out 6.5 before converting all my leagues from 6.12. Ideally, it would be great to be able to still run the 6.12 version when I wanted to, or at least until the each season ends before converting. But, I don't want to wait to install 6.5, because I would like to run it with new leagues to test it out.

This is not the same as backward league file compatibility. The league files are not normally the issue, it is the engine behind the scenes that can make significant differences in game results. Especially with the AI changes, I expect we will all see some obvious differences in outcomes (albeit for the better).

Does anyone know if we can have both versions at the same time? Maybe copying our 6.12 directory in another location to preserve the ability to run it.

Yes, you can run them at the same time in entirely different directories.

How? Do we just put the 6.5 exe in a new directory? Sorry if this is a dumb question.

Do a fresh install of OOTP6.12 in a separate directory. Then, when the 6.5 expansion pack is available, install it to your original install off OOTP6.12(in the Program Files/Out of the Park Developments/OOTP6 folder.

You should be able to start both from your desktop, but you'll have to remember which icon is which.

I don't think having both .exe in the same directory will work with 6.5. I don't recall where I read that, but I think due to the different data structure in 6.5, you will need to install both OOTP6.12 and OOTP6.5 in separate directories if you want to run both.

Markus, Steve, SkyDog, or another beta tester could confirm though.

Yeah, spleen said exactly that (he's a beta tester, I believe).

This is correct. I have the full version installed in my OOTP6 directory and the Beta Expansion in a new OOTP65 directory.

IIRC, there is a mention that 6.5 will have a unique icon. So even that issue should be overcome.

yep.
and the exe's have different names. but I definitely would echo the other guys who say to install in two seperate directories. Makes it really easy to convert your 6.12 leagues into 6.5 (just copy them into your 6.5 directory and open them with 6.5)

so version 6.5 will install in a new directory. so that means you will have 6.12 still on your computer? are you able to delete it? or it needs to be there to run 6.5?

also when you install 6.5 will it check to see you have 6.12 full version install?

will it setup a separate file -- or do we have to rename/move files ?

I am getting confused from these posts.

Make no mistake: it sets up an entirely new directory--OOTP6.5. You don't have to do anything but accept defaults to make it do so.

And per your previous post, just move the 6.12 league into that directory and open it? Makes sense. Is there also an import option to bring that league into the directory and, if so, do you prefer one method over the other?

Edit: I should have said copy rather than move. That is if you want the same league running in both versions. If you just want to update the league, then why wouldn't you just move it? After backing it up of course.

Your 6.12 leagues will convert automatically when you open them in 6.5.

Won't having two versions installed require the use of two licences?

Not good if you have a version on your home pc and your latop!

6.5 will have to have a separate license, don't you think? Otherwise, people could get it for free.

1. No. I installed it on my laptop and I didn't even have V6 in it.
2. Yes. See, it's like a different game. You'll have:

>OOTP
>OOTP 6
>OOTP 6.5

But did you have a *license* for v6 on it? I installed on a new machine that didn't have v6. It worked fine up until a build or two ago, at which point it wouldn't run without having a v6 license on the machine. That makes sense. Otherwise, people could get the whole game for $9.99.
