States League - All-Time All-Stars
POWERFUL 'BAMA TEAM UNVEILED
Oct 21 - Alabama announced its 32-man roster Monday. The Alabama stars will have perhaps the most powerful 3-4-5 combination in the 38-team States League. Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, and Willie McCovey combined for 2,136 career home runs. Smith expects to start LF Heinie Manush (1923-39), a career .330 hitter who twice batted .378, over fellow Hall of Famer and Cubs great Billy Williams (1959-76), who swatted 426 home runs in 18 seasons. The team also has a solid shortstop tandem of Joe Sewell (1920-33) and Ozzie Smith (1978-96). The starting rotation will be anchored by 300-game winners Don Sutton and Early Wynn, with Satchel Paige, Virgil 'Fire' Trucks, and Dave Veres coming out of the pen. The Alabamans rank 13th in total major league players, but have ten 20th-century Cooperstowners, more than all but four states, and expect to give top-seeded Texas a run for their money in the seven-team Dixie division. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++ States League is a single-season tournament to determine which state has produced the best major leaguers all-time. There are no trades, finances are off -- the task of owners is to select the best combination of players from their state's player pool. We have a few states still open, and are aiming for a Nov. 2 opening day. Come to the States League home page or email the commissioner at Statesleague@aol.com for more information. Quickly looking at Pennsylvania, I see that Mike Mussina is not on the team, is there plans to add him?

In Pennsylvania's case, there are 1294 players to choose from and no shortage of star-caliber players, so there are bound to be some big names left off the 32-man roster. With so many to choose from, Mussina was probably simply overlooked. On the other hand, my home state of Colorado has only 68 players to choose from, and has Johnny Frederick and Johnny Lindell as its star players. If you are interested Rolen, there are a few states left, including Missouri (Carl Hubbell, Yogi Berra), Minnesota (Dave Winfield, Paul Molitor), Nebraska (Bob Gibson, Richie Ashburn, Wade Boggs), and Indiana (Three Finger Brown, Billy Herman, Chuck Klein). Washington (I live across the border now and originally from WA)...
...at least we have Ryne Sandberg. Doesn't look good for the Evergreen State.

Dean:
Sorry, no Canada. But Canadians can cheer for Oklahoma, which I'm told (by the Oklahoma GM) is the adopted home of the only Canadian Hall of Famer, Fergie Jenkins. (That is, until Larry Walker is enshrined.) Perhaps a States League II would replace some of the smaller states with Canada, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Venezuela, Mexico, "Central America" and "Europe". But.. first things first, let's see how bad Maine really is. ![]() Hurryinhawks: Welcome aboard! CoachK: There were New Hampshire and Delaware teams originally, but they were the victims of an evil contraction plot by the commissioner. Actually, I tried to field teams from those states and there weren't enough players. As it is, some of the smaller states (Colorado, Maine, Oregon) will have less than 25 men on their rosters.Incidentally, 98.3% of all U.S.-born major leaguers were born in the 38 states (incl. DC) in the League. That's just 1.7% born in the 13 states left out. Likewise, over 98% of all U.S.-born 20th Century Hall of Famers are from the 38 states. That's 150/153, the three leftovers being Ralph Kiner (NM), Harmon Killebrew (ID), and Carlton Fisk (VT). (Fisk once had a plaque made in his honor replaced because it called him a 'native of Vermont.' He considered himself a New Hampshirite; the hospital just happened to be across the river in Vermont.) |

Actually... believe it or not but I was on a work trip in New Hampshire, and was traveling through a small town and read on the McDonald's sign "Congrats on making the Fame Fisk!"
So I guess everyone in NH considers him a NHite also
