Senators Clip Orioles, Face Tigers Tomorrow

Pospisil Delivers, Sens vs. Tigers for AL Pennant
October 7th, 1901

Injuries prevented Ellsworth Pospisil from playing nearly half the season, but he came through in a pinch as the Washington Senators defeated the Baltimore Orioles 7-3 and earned the right to face the Detriot Tigers for the American League Championship.

Pospisil went 2-4 in the game, but delievered 2 out triples with runners on 1st and 3rd in the first and third innings, driving in four of the Senators seven runs. Starting pitcher Doug Trader threw his 22nd complete game of the season, allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out four.

The Orioles were without star pitchers Wilton Curry (13-7 1.87 ERA) and Ivan White (12-15 3.36 ERA) and were forced to start Randall Baratta. Baratta allowed Washington baserunners in every inning, and had trouble throwing strikes all day.

The Senators are favored to defeat the Tigers, but are unsure about which member of the "Capitol Crew" will start the Championship Game. But they are likely to face Detroit's Danny Wagner, the AL leader in wins (24).

Tigers Upset Sens, Claim American League Championship

Wagner Baffles Washington Batsmen
October 8th, 1901

Danny Wagner outpitched the hardest throwing member of the "Capitol Crew" to lead the Detroit Tigers to the inaugural American League Championship. Wagner dominated Washingon batters all day, while Eugene Wrobel imploded on the mound, giving up 10 runs on 15 hits.

Rightfielder Israel Cooley hit his 5th homerun of the season, capping a 5 run 5th inning that put the Tigers ahead for good. Detroit manager Christopher Claus gave his starting pitcher all the credit for the teams championship run, "He (Wagner) beat them on the last day of the season and he beat them again today, of course he is the reason we won."

Wagner had great success against the Senators this season going 5-2 against them with an ERA of 2.71. He also struck out 32 Senators batters and walked only 6.

Washington team captain James "Bones" Gullockson had no anwsers as to why Wagner baffles his team. "I guess he's got our number," said Gullockson, "what else can you say."

1901: Awards

Erasmus, Dahms Claim Batter of the Year
Bewley and Wagner Award-Winning Pitchers

The National League Champion Brooklyn Superbas swept the awards ceremonies, claiming both the National League Batter and Pitcher of the Year Awards. "It just shows you how good we really are," said Erasmus, "we've got the best players in the world on this team." Owner Charles Ebbets doesn't plan to make many changes to his Superbas, "We've got a championship calibur team already," said Ebbets, "no reason to stray from it."

In the American League, .400 hitter Aaron Dahms capped his remarkable season with the AL Batter of the Year Award. Dahms was happy with the award, but worries about the fate of the franchise, "Rumour has it we're leaving town," said Dahms, "I just hope wherever we end up the people are as welcoming as they are here in Milwaukee." The AL Pitcher of the Year Award went to Detroit's Danny Wagner, the hero of the Tigers Championship Season. "Hopefully this is just the beginning," said Wagner, "I feel as if my best ball is still ahead of me."

1901-1902 Offseason: Decisions

American League Ownership Meeting
November 5th, 1901

"Mr. Feinkohl," said the deep, bellowing voice of the American League President, "are you prepared to announce what city to which you intend to relocate?"

"As of yet I haven't," replied the slender, yet stern faced man, "does the matter require immediate resolution?" "It certainly does," replied Byron Johnson, "and and it has been resolved as Mr. Cominsky and I have already arranged a lease in St. Louis, your team will play at Sportsman's Park, name it what you will."

The man sat quietly for a moment, his mouth fixed open, collecting his thoughts. As he took his glasses off and wiped them with his handkercheif, he said, "Mr. Johnson, I appreciate what you have done for this league, but you have no right to make decisions about my franchise without...," "Let me remind you Mr. Feinkohl," interrupted the heavyset man as he stood up, "This is my league, and you will become an even richer man in St. Louis."

"It is true that I had discussed the possibility of St. Louis with you," replied Feinkohl, "but I wasn't aware that any decisions were up to you." "Mr. Cominsky has generously paid a good portion of the lease for you Mr. Feinkohl, it has all been arranged and I suggest you make your peace with it," said Johnson smiling and lighting a cigar, "I'm partial to the St. Louis Browns, has a nice ring to it does it not?"

Two weeks later, the Milwaukee franchise was transferred to St. Louis under the monicker, the St. Louis Browns.

1901-1902 Offseason: "Killer" Goes Across Town

Kulikowski spurns Phils, signs with crosstown A's
Taken from The Philadelphia Sun

Baseball player Gary Kulikowski has ignored the threats of the Phillies ownership group and signed a contract with the Philadelphia Athletics of the rival American League.

Owners Alfred Reach and John Rogers have vowed revenge, stating that Kulikowski already has a legally binding contract with the Phillies. But Kulikowski believes that contract to be completed. "They (Phillies owners) had made a one-way contract with me for the 1901 season," said Kulikowski, "last time I checked the 1901 season is over."

American League President "Ban" Johnson was thrilled with the signing. "It just serves as further proof that we offer a superior product," said Johnson, "National League owners are more than welcome to adapt to our style of play and join us at the top." When asked if he expected a court battle, since Kulikowski is a player of considerable ability, Johnson replied, "I would expect nothing less, especially when its the best pitcher in the National League coming to play for us."

In other news, Phillies manager Patrick Brand has been fired. Many people in the organization believe he is responsible for the feud between Kulikowski and the Phillies ownership.

1901-1902 Offseason: Courtroom Battles

Kulikowski Ordered to Return to Phillies
"Ban" Johnson Transfers "Killer" to the Blues
Taken from the Philadelphia Sun

The Philadelphia Supreme Court has ruled in favor of the Philadelphia Phillies and has ordered pitcher Gary Kulikowski to return to the Philadelphia team of the National League. In their ruling, the court granted a permanent injunction, preventing Mr. Kulikowski from playing for the A's. However, American League President "Ban" Johnson has found a loophole in the ruling. The injunction is only effective in Pennslyvania, so Kulikowski has since been transferred to the Cleveland team in the American League, effectively nullifying the court's ruling. If Mr. Kulikowski should travel to Philadelphia as a member of any other ballclub, he could be arrested.

"Mr. Kulikowski will not play in Philadelphia, nor will he travel there," said President Johnson, "the National League shall not keep this man from playing baseball wherever he so chooses."

Owners of the Philadelphia Phillies Alfred Reach and John Rogers were not available for comment.

1901-1902 Offseason: The Rest of the News

Notes from the Press Association
Offseason Edition

Cincinnati Reds owner John T. Brush opened a new ballpark, called the "Palace of the Fans," with the Reds planning to inaugurate it on April 22, 1902. A much larger ballpark, it features a staggering distance of 450 feet to the rightfield wall.

Nervous owners in the National League search for effective leadership. They believe that much of the success that the American League has thus far enjoyed comes from the leadership of League President Byron Johnson. Current National League President Nick Young is considered a "whipping boy" by a number of baseball executives.

National League owners are also worried about the ruling in the Gary Kulikowski case. The injunction states that no National League player may "jump" to the American League, while having a contract with a National League team, namely the Philadelphia Phillies. Kulikowski is the most high profile case, but many younger ballplayers, unhappy with playing time and low salaries in the National League have "jumped" to the American League. The ruling of the Philadelphia Supreme Court is only effective in Philadelphia, however, and really only applies to Mr. Kulikowski, therefore there is little hope for National League owners of regaining players lost, or preventing other players from "jumping" to American League teams other than the Philadelphia Athletics, as all a player has to do to avoid prosecution is not travel to or play in Philadelphia.

Gary Kulikowski has been signed to a 5-year, $35,000 contract by the Cleveland Blues. However, while the case is being appealed, Kulikowski cannot play for the Cleveland franchise. The ruling is expected sometime this season.

According to the Chigago Daily News the Chicago Orphans of the National League have changed their name to the Cubs.

Candace Glasscock, a recent girlfriend of Brooklyn Superbas player Christopher Erasmus was arrested in Brooklyn, NY after an unsuccessful attempt to shoot him, leading many to quip that Erasmus is "The Most Hated Man Alive."

St. Louis Cardinals owner Frank Robison has put up $10,000 dollars, stating that the Brooklyn Superbas will not repeat as National League Champions. Brooklyn is considered by many to be the best team in either league.

Sorry about the delay to anyone who was/is following this. I've had to go back and forth with this job I'm being considered for. Somewhat of a pain, but I hope to have something up this weekend as I just finished simming through May in 1902.

Apologies,

Kav

Upstarts in Contention, Pirates and Sens Lead

June 1st, 1902

The surprising Pittsburgh Pirates have been the best team in either league so far this season. Led by team captain James Pounders, the Pirates were a remarkable 17-8 in May, giving them a one-game lead over the heavily favored Brooklyn Superbas. The Pirates have had a great offensive ballclub for years, but the pitching staff, which was the worst in the National League last season, is currently 3rd in runs allowed. Ralph Chipman has been the best hurler in the National League, going 9-2 with an ERA of 2.58.

Unfortunatly for the Bucs, they play in the same league as the powerhouse Superbas. After a slow start in April (6-6), the boys from Brooklyn came alive in May (18-8), even putting together a 10-game winning streak. Christopher "The Hated Man" Erasmus, last seasons Batter of the Year, has struggled, only 6 extra base hits with 0 HR, but David "Punchy" Beard has picked up the slack with his strong play. The real story, however, is the Brooklyn pitching staff, which currently leads either league in every pitching category. The highest ERA found in the Brooklyn stable of pitchers belongs to Ryan Stagner, a minute 2.58. After a 1-3 start, Rube Bewley went 6-1 in May and leads the NL in strikeouts.

In the American League, the Washington Senators have received a much needed spark in the form of centerfielder Ellsworth Pospisil. Pospisil missed much of last season with various ailments, but has been the best player on a very talented Senators team. Despite the improved offensive numbers, the Sens backbone remains the "Capitol Crew" headlined by Douglas Trader. Trader has been spectacular (7-1 3.30 ERA) and leads the AL in wins and strikeouts (49). But "Wild Bill" Taylor has been very good as well, going 5-1, despite his rather questionable lifestyle. "Billy is a drunk," says manager Curtis Wallin, "he's probably pitched drunk before, hell I don't know, but what can I say if he's winning."

Last seasons champion Detroit Tigers are currently tied for second with a record of 19-16. The Tigers have been inconsistent, and with the exception of Danny Wagner, have not pitched well. Leftfielder Wayne Solorio is being praised as baseballs only "true" all around player, hitting for average (.312) and power (4 HR 24 RBI) and stealing bases (14), all while playing platinum glove worthy defense.

The American League has also featured it's share of surprises, with last seasons worst team climbing the ladder into second place. The White Stockings of Chicago have pitched the ball very well in the young season, only allowing opponents to hit one homerun! But the offense has left much to be desired. Dennis Hansen has lost his power, 0 HR in 123 AB, and is one of only two regulars hitting .300 or better. It has been a nice run, but the White Stockings cannot keep up with the elite clubs from Washington and Detroit.

Notes from The Press Association

In early May, a circuit court in St. Louis rules that the NL reserve clause is unfairly restrictive on three defectors who have "jumped" to the Browns. The players, all minor leaguers, are not of note, however the ruling is. The National Leagues inability to retrieve "jumpers" is troubling to the ownership group.

The Gary Kulikowski case has yet to be resolved. A decision from the Supreme Court is expected sometime this month. Kulikowski, who has since signed a contract with Cleveland, after being transferred from the Philadelphia club of the American League, has been sitting in the stands awaiting a decision. In his abscence, the Cleveland club has plummeted into last place.

New York Giants star catcher Joel Maciel was injured on May 13th when Cubs CF Edward Dupree (6"4 205) ran over the slightly built Maciel (5"10 165). Maciel suffered a broken cheekbone in the collision and is expected to miss at least a month. The Giants have been ravaged with injuries for some time now, but team captain Henry Bernard seems to have recovered from last seasons back injuries.

Boston Beaneaters outfielder James Vickery has not reported to the team yet this season, and no one seems to know where he is. He has apparently moved from his Boston home without leaving as much as a letter of his intentions. Vickery was under contract for this season.

Alex "The Abyss" Herring of the St. Louis Cardinals contiunes to be the lone bright spot on an otherwise dismal Cardinals team. He leads the NL in ERA and has accounted for 6 of the teams 15 wins.

The Reds of Cincinnati opened the Palace of the Fans, promptly going 11-20 in the new park, ensuring their place at the bottom of the National League is secure. However, 23-year-old Sam "The Web" Gehringer is expected to rescue the franchise in the near future. Reds manager Benjamin Shope has called Gehringer, "the finest player I've ever seen or heard about."

The Philadelphia Phillies had some difficulties deciding on a manager to replace Patrick Brand. To start the season, the Phillies were managed by player/manager Lonnie Shope (no relation to Benjamin), but he was replaced at the beginning of May with Boyd Sutton, a former talent scout.

Batter of the Month Awards

AL - Russell Vining, CF, Baltimore Orioles - Russell hit .410 through May and has batted in 18 runs. He is 4th in the AL in batting.

NL - Andy Magers, LF, Chicago (NL) Cubs - Andy is a relatively "unknown" superstar. He currently leads either league in hitting (.418), including a .398 avg. in May.

Pitcher of the Month Awards

AL - Ivan White, Baltimore Orioles - Ivan went 6-2 in May to win his second career POM award. He is 7-3 on the season for the disappointing Orioles.

NL - Ralph Chipman, Pittsburgh Pirates - Chipman has been spectacular for the Pirates, winning 6 games in May while posting an ERA of only 1.87. He is 9-2 on the season.

June 22, 1902: Overruled

"Killer" Goes Free, Phils Lose Owner
Federal Court Denies Jurisdiction, angry Alfred Reach sells intrests
Taken from The Philadelphia Sun

National League Owners Beware!

In a stunning reversal, U.S. District judge Wilbur Orville denied the claim of the Philadelphia Phillies on pitcher Gary "Killer" Kulikowski, thus ending the nearly year long feud. Kulikowski is expected to make his American League debut on June 25th when the Cleveland Blues face the St. Louis (A) Browns.

The Philadelphia club of the National League also received another blow when majority owner Alfred Reach sold his shares of the team to co-owner Col. John Rogers. Reach was supposedly irrate with ruling of the court and decided that the business of baseball was becoming "outrageous" and "immoral." "If we let the players do as they please, jumping from league to league on a whim, what good are contracts in the first place?" said Reach, "I will not be a part of a sport where ethics are secondary to salaries and fair play."

American League President "Ban" Johnson found the comments from Mr. Reach laughable, "If Mr. Reach has a problem with the ethics of the game, he should examine the league he was a part of," said Mr. Johnson, "its not a question of ethics, its a question of money." Mr. Johnson is alluding to the fact that Mr. Reach sold his intrests because the American League Philadelphia Athletics are outdrawing the the Philies almost 3 to 1 and offer up a better team.

The ruling might serve as a wake-up call to many of the National League owners. It effectively eliminates any possibility of the National League to legally regain "jumpers" (player that move to the American League while still under contract to the National League). Since it's inception last year, the American League has steadily outdrawn the National League, leaving American League owners with the means to offer players larger contracts. Despite its history, the National League has many players whom cranks dislike, mostly drunks and shysters. Even the drunks in the American League are more likeable, players like the good-hearted "Wild Bill" Taylor of the Washington Senators. Despite its history, the American League poses a much larger threat to the National than any of its predecessors.

Courtroom Battles Continue, Browns and Pirates Lead

July 1st, 1902

The Pittsburgh Pirates continue to play superb baseball, finishing June with a record of 15-9, to improve to 42-22 on the season, the best record in either league. They continue to be led by a powerhouse lineup which features three regulars (Pounders, Rollin, and Kushner) hitting .350 or better and leads baseball in nearly every major offensive category. A fourth Pirate hitting better than .350 was injured early in the month, starting third baseman David Broadnax injured his throwing arm in a game vs. Brooklyn. Manager Adam McDonnell believes Broadnax is suffering from a "dead-arm" and just needs rest. The Superbas struggled, only managing a record of 13-12, and were swept for the first time in two seasons by the Pirates at Washington Park. Christopher Erasmus is the only player hitting over .300 and while the pitching staff has been solid, the team has underachieved thus far. The Beaneaters of Boston feature two of baseballs premier sluggers, Earl Mott and David Wait, and put together a 7 game winning streak to end the month with a record of 33-33. Eddy "Demon" Hyder has been the story for the Beaneaters, leading the league in stolen bases, triples, and runs scored and is capable of playing every position on the diamond, with the exception of catcher and pitcher.

The Washington Senators anemic offense plagued them throughout June (12-14), scoring more than 5 runs only four times. Their struggles allowed the St. Louis (A) Browns, formerly the Milwaukee Brewers, to jump into first place with a spectacular June (18-8). First baseman Robert "The Savior" Bower has put on a long ball display, hitting homeruns of 529 and 526 ft., and has hit 9 already this season. The defending champion Detroit Tigers remained in contention behind BOM Wayne Solorio, whom is strongly considered to have passed Erasmus as the most feared hitter in baseball, a consideration that has angered Erasmus over the last two weeks. Baltimore recovered from a poor May to jump back into the race, only 2 and a half games back, and the upstart Athletics have continued to play well, remaining only 3 and a half games back. Despite the return of Gary Kulikowski, the Cleveland Blues fortunes continued to take a turn for the worse when star pitcher Edwin Abernethy ruptured a bicep tendon in his throwing arm in a game vs. the Boston (A) Americans. Edwin's violent side-arm delivery, which he has dubbed the "Crossfire" seems to have been the culprit in the injury. Instead of stepping towards the batter, Edwin steps toward third base and whips his arm across his body, causing many batters to recoil for fear of being hit with the pitch. Abernethy insists that he will not change his style of pitching when he returns from the injury.

Notes from The Press Association

On June 4th in a game versus the New York Giants, Cardinals second baseman John Werner became the first man in the history of the National League to collect 6 hits in a game. "It was the best game I ever played," said Werner of the feat, "sometimes the ball just hits the bat and goes where the fielders ain't."

Orioles first baseman Kurtis Stith became the first American League player to "jump" to the National League, joining the Chicago (N) Cubs on June 8th. Ban Johnson had no comment on this development and does not plan to dispute the transaction.

Eugene Wrobel has been a tough luck pitcher, with a 7-6 record despite only a 2.29 ERA. Even his victories have been difficult, having to pitch 11 innings of 1-run baseball to get a win versus Baltimore on June 20th.

Boston (A) Americans pitcher Mario Cale walked 10 batters in a record-setting display of wildness during a game versus the Philadelphia (A) Athletics. Cale has since been released and joined the Pacific Coast League to regain his control.

The Philladelphia (N) Phillies outlasted the St. Louis (N) Cardinals in a 22-inning marathon game played June 20th at Robison Field in Missouri. The game featured 11 different pitchers and lasted a whopping 7 hours and 32 minutes! 19-year-old phenom John Henry of the Phillies finished the day 6-10 with 2 triples, 2 RBIs, 2 stolen bases, and 4 runs scored. Henry is also regarded as a fine pitcher, but has been used primarily as an outfielder by manager Boyd Sutton due to his strong arm.

"Killer" Kulikowski made his Cleveland debut on June 25th, defeating the St. Louis (A) Browns 5-2. Kulikowski pitched a complete game, striking out 5. When asked about the courts ruling, Kulikowski felt that the decision took too long and blamed Philadelphia ownership for the delay. "I told them last season that I would not play for them," said Kulikowski, "if they weren't so scared about their profits, maybe a resolution could've been found months ago." National League owners have become increasingly frustrated in their attempts to keep up with the American League, leading many to believe that the two leagues will make peace with each other sometime in the near future.

Former Boston outfielder James Vickery was found dead in a San Francisco hotel room on June 29th. The death was ruled a suicide as Vickery had apparently inhaled poisonous gas. Vickery had allegedly gambled and lost a considerable amount of not only his, but money he was "holding" for his former teammates. He left a suicide note condemning the evils of women and gambling.

Batter of the Month Award

AL - Wayne Solorio, LF, Detroit Tigers - Solorio hit .382 with 2 homeruns and 13 RBI in June. For the season he is third in the AL in batting with an average of .341, second in homeruns with 6, second in RBI with 37, and third in runs scored with 36.

NL - Edward Williams, 1B, Cincinnati Reds - Williams hit .404 with 3 homeruns and 15 RBI for the month, by far the best output of his career. Williams is best known for his considerable girth, standing only six feet tall and weighing over 250 lbs.

Pitcher of the Month Award

AL - Richard Vaz, Detroit Tigers - Vaz usually goes unnoticed behind Danny Wagner, but went 5-0 with an ERA of 1.19 in June to win his first POM award. He is 8-2 on the season.

NL - Ruben Dupont, Philadelphia (N) Phillies - Dupont went 4-2 with a 2.29 ERA in June. A bit of a paradox, Dupont features neither great control, nor velocity on his pitches, but has a knack for getting out of slippery situations.

July 8th, 1902: Johnson vs. McGraw

In Conversation
Discussing Baltimore Orioles Manager/Owner John McGraw

"I believe him to be too salty for our league," replied the stern faced American League president as he rhythmically swung his cane to-and-fro as he walked.

"How so?" said Cominsky, walking briskly beside him, removing his pocket watch to check the time.

"Arguements with umpires, unsportsmanlike conduct, and his attitude do not serve us well Charles," replied Johnson, speaking to the man is if privy to some information not yet needed to be divulged, "and I tell you this in confidence, I believe the bastard is sabotaging us."

"Sabotage, honestly Byron," he replied with a chuckle, "what types of espionage have you dreamed up."

"Not overtly, but subtley, he's made a number of questionable decisions." replied Johnson, his temper beginning to crack the surface of his round face. The knuckles of his hand turning white as his grip tightened around the golden handle of his cane.

"Such as?" said Cominsky, again disregarding the accusations as heresy.

"That's not the point dammit!" his temper now getting the better of him, "the point is that I don't trust him and I no longer see a use for him!" his eyes now firmly fixated upon his friend turned foe.

"That is the point, he is part owner of the franchise Byron, and you think a man like McGraw would sabotage his own investment?" replied Cominsky, with a air of superiority and sarcasm.

"I hear rumours Charles," said Johnson, now recollecting himself after his notoriously short fuse had already burned out, "he's sold off Stith, I don't expect him to stop there."

"He didn't sell him off Byron," said Cominsky, "by God I tell you Stith jumped of his own will."

"It appears we differ in opinion Charles," said Johnson as he walked ahead of Cominsky, "but mark my words, John McGraw is leaving us soon, and I fear others may join him.

July 8th, 1902: Secrets

"Mr. McGraw, I come with a personal message from Mr. Freedman," said the slightly built man as he fumbled with his briefcase, unable to open it, "and Mr. Brush has also seen these documents and wishes to send his congratulations to you as well."

"Knowles, give me that damn thing," said McGraw, growing irritated with the nervousness of the personal secretary of Giants owner Andrew Freedman, "Jesus, why carry it if you can't open the damn thing? Let me ask you this, is everything in order?"

"Yes sir," replied an embarassed Fred Knowles, stumbling backward, out of the way of the notoriously aggressive man, "I mean, as far as I know, I mean, it should be, I mean......"

SNAP!!!

"There, its open," said McGraw, "but I think I broke your latches," moving towards his desk, searching for the cigar box. "Cigar, Knowles?"

"No sir," replied Knowles, "I don't smoke them, make me feel green."

"Hell you are green Knowles, but you'll learn," said McGraw, "Give me the contracts, I'll look them over tonight, after the meeting."

"Meeting sir?" replied Knowles, a bit distraught at the sight of his broken briefcase, fiddling with the latches that were hanging down.

"I've got to negotiate my release, and speak with Mr. Wentworth to make sure he's on board," said McGraw, lighting his cigar, "I don't foresee any problems," he went on, "Wentworth is old, ready to sell his interests."

"Does Mr. Johnson suspect anything sir?" said Knowles, gathering his courage to inqure.

"Yes, I'm sure he does," replied McGraw, leaning back in his chair, crossing his hands behind his head, "but if he hadn't begun throwing accusations, this process wouldn't have been put in motion now would it Knowles?"

"But Mr. Freedman and Mr. Brush have been negotiating with you for quite some time about buying..."

"Goodbye Knowles," McGraw interrupted, "I'll send for you when I've reviewed these."

"Good day sir."

It's a shame that gems like this were lost in the crash.

Rolling Wheels

How has it come to this?

The sweet taste of success was still in the mouth of Harold Wentworth. Only a year ago his Orioles had been one of the most successful teams in baseball, but all that had changed. Baseball had been the backbone of his family for as long as he could remember. Family? What family? A son beneath a headstone and a wife unable to bear the loss right beside him.

How has it come to this?

That greedy son of a b**** would do it to me, in a heartbeat. He knew what happened, and never a word, never a g**damn word from him, he would do it to me, he's already done it to me. New York, I hate New York. My boy would understand this, he loved this team, but not what it's become, he would understand this, he would have to.

"Promise me one thing Mr. McGraw, promise me you'll as soon destroy what I've built before you let Byron Johnson take them." said Wentworth. "Promise me that and I'll accept your offer."

"That is a guarantee sir." replied the man before him, removing the contracts as he moved closer to the desk. "Mr. Freedman will gladly purchase controlling intrest and make sure Byron Johnson won't have an Oriole team to field anymore." "The wheels are ready to be turned, all we need now is a signature from you."

How has it come to this?

"He's no particular friend to you," said McGraw, "how many times has he visited since Harry died, how many times since Roberta?"

"Don't," replied the old man, raising his hand in the air, "don't use them to further your intrest, this isn't about them. This is about what's best for my team." That didn't even convince me. "Can I trust you to make sure that everything goes according to plan?"

"Without question sir," replied McGraw, "without question."

The old man signed the paper before him and stood up to look out the window where he'd taught his boy to play ball.

How has it come to this?
