Guillermo Hernandez actually went as Willie until his last season in the bigs (1988), when he insisted on being called by his actual name.

Keith "Zonk" Moreland (like I could let that one slide by :-))
Bob "The Deer" Dernier Gary "Sarge" Matthews Rick "the Red Baron" Sutcliffe Steve "Rainbow" Trout Don "Caveman" Robinson Rick "Big Daddy" Reuschel Greg "Moon Man" Minton Lou "Sweet Lou" Whitaker (yeah, he had it too - and more apt) Ron "Gator" Guidry "Steady" Eddie Murray Mike "Pags" Pagliarulo Dave "the Cobra" Parker Steve "Bedrock" Bedrosian Some lesser known really obscure ones... Garry "If I ain't startin, I ain't departin" Templeton (refused invite to the 82? all-star game as a reserve) Jeff "Penitentary Face" Leonard (a really, really ugly man) Ryne "Baby Ruth" Sandber ("Ryno" was inevitable, but this was coined by Whitey Herzog -- and caught on in the Chicago media for most of June/July) Ken "5-0-2-0" Oberkfell (so named because he always hit for a decent average, but never drove in or scored many runs.... 5 ABs, 0 runs, 2 hits, 0 RBIs) Dave "Mr. May" Winfield (given by the Boss; a reference to Mr October, who's big hits came in the postseason) Also --- baseball-reference.com does include most of the commonly used nicknames with player entries...... |

Mike "Hit Man" Easler
Rick "The Rooster" Burleson Carl "Yaz" Yaztrzemski Rich "Geddy" Gedman Bill "Soup" Campbell Steve "Shag" Crawford Bill "Billy Buck" Buckner Mike "The Gator" Greenwell Carlos "Blowfish" Quintana Okay, so it was only my friends and I who called Quintana "Blowfish." We had some other nicknames that were less appropriate... As you may have guessed, I'm a Red Sox fan. |

Gee you guys covered most of the ones I remembered..
From the Yankees there were... Don "Donnie Baseball" Mattingly Dave "Rags" Righetti Mike "Pags" Pagliarulo Tim "Rock" Raines Steve "Bye-Bye" Balboni Paul "Paulie" O'Neill Dave "Mr. May" or "Winny" Winfield Also... Ron Guidry went by "Gator" or "Louisiana Lighting", if I recall the announcers during games called him Gator, but before and in reference as Lightning Andy Pettite also had a Louisiana nicname too (cant remember it right now)... APBA had Rickey Henderson as "Hendu" and Dave Henderson as something like "Hindu" or something like that... |

As for Stubbs, I'm pretty sure Scully and/or the other Dodger announcers would refer to him as Cadillac (though not real common like many other nicknames players had). Seems it had something to do with his smooth and seemingly effortless style. Looking back at his career, I think effortless takes a new meaning
