abnormal termination

Please help - I have had no luck searching this forum for the solution to the C++ abnormal termination I am receiving.

I have pII 333 mhz 64k ram 5 gb free on the hard drive directx version 8.

Copied the setup files from a CD to the hard drive and then changed their properties so they are not read only.

Have tried installing and uninstalling several times. Running the 4.1 version. Extracting the 4.1 directly into the ootp4 folder.

Anytime I try creating a new league, saving a league or opening a new league I get booted out with a runtime error.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

It sounds like the game file you are trying to load is just the v4.1 executable file in it's own folder. I would guess you have installed the game in a different directory, possibly even in a directory like C:\Program Files\OOTP4\OOTP4\ . I'd check that first off. That same error happened a lot when the first patch for OOTP4 was released.

Another way to check for this: If you are using a link (program shortcut) to open the game check where it leads to and open Windows Explorer to see what files are in the target directory. If it is just the OOTP4.EXE file then that is the problem. Find the directory the full game was installed in and change the program shortcut link to go there.

Note that this is assuming you have installed the full game - some people call "unzipping the game patch" an install, but it does not sound like you are doing that. Good luck in any case and let us know what happens.

Thanks for the reply Killebrew,

That is not the problem - I've tried starting the game from the ootp4 directory and all files are present. The game loads fine under the 4.1 version. I started up an exhibition game and did not receive the runtime error.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks,
Mike

What do the files in the league folders look like? Did you change the properties on all of those files? Is there a chance you missed one of the .dat files in one of the league folders? It sounds like the problem may be occurring when the game is trying to access and write to one of the database files.

Have you tried reinstalling from a fresh download? Or only from the copy on the CD?

That would be my next guess too - some key league files that are still read-only (or even some missing league files or folders). I'd 1st check the files in the league that opens up when you start the program, sounds like the game is pooping out when trying to save that before going on to the next task. Read-only league files (*.DAT as well as any text files the game writes to) would definately result in that runtime error. BTW, this may have happened if you changed the read-only properties by R-clicking on the entire OOTP4 folder, often subdirectories & files are still read-only when you do that.

The other longshot idea: Missing files or folders in the league that opens up when you start the program. If an incomplete back up was made and files are missing that could cause that runtime error too. If you reinstalled the full game from scratch and chose yes to overwriting (if prompted) then this should not happen as the default league is complete & we've had no reported issues there. If the install was incomplete though and uses some previously installed files in the same game directory that were not overwritten then that could result in the error you see. Installing from scratch in a brand new directory should work if you have tried all other avenues.

Thanks for the advise, but still no luck. I un-installed and then re-downloaded the program from the ootp4 website. I did a fresh installation, but still get the same error when I try to create a league.

I am runnning Windows 98 and could upgrade to win 2000 if this would help.

Thanks

Can you list all the .dat files in your create folder.

Also all the files in your OOTP folder.

Maybe for some reason there is something missing.

Has the game ever worked for you? Can you play with the default league? If the game has worked for you in the past, what has changed since it was initially working for you.

Create folder has the following dat files:
coaches, league, park, parkconfig, players, promos, record, schedule, teams, teams2 and weather.

Ootp folder has:
update41, afnames.dat, anames.dat, ootp4, cities.dat, colors, eras.dat, frumis.dat, graphics setup, graphics, injury, install.log, lafnames.dat, lanames.dat, league.dat and names.dat

This game has never worked on this computer. I reformatted harddrive and reinstalled windows at one point.

The game will boot me out with an abnormal termination when I try running the default league.

The game will work when I run an exhibition, but when I go to the roster screen and click on a player the program will boot me out with a page fault - kernel32.dll @ f:6ffb983. (Don't quote me on the address, if needed I will check and verify.)

Thanks for your help.

I'm a little confused then. I re-downloaded and reinstalled the proigram from scratch. I verified that all the download files were the correct size (I downloaded the 10 1.4 files). Should I try to download again?

I don't know why it would be different but thought it might be worth giving it a try.

Redownloaded/reinstalled the program, same problem. Then reinstalled to a different directory and it works!!!

I don't understand why a different directory would make a difference, unless it has something to do with the computer registry.

Thanks for all your help!!
