I do have to stay I was pretty surprised given that Ryan usually kills lefties and Ortiz usually doesn't hit lefties well. Not heartbroken or anything.
He's actually been respectable (ie, not sucking) v lefties for the last 2 seasons. A 784 ops v lefties is much better then earlier in his career.

I always liked Ortiz, but the Twins didn't let him do what the Sox let him do. Swing for the fences. The Twins haven't had a 30+ homer since something like 1987 because they play the "small ball" which is why Ortiz didn't do well in Minnesota.

Once he got to Boston, they let him swing away.

Ryan is absolutely sick vs. lefties, sick vs. everyone now, but especially vs. lefties. Amazing. Not something I think we'll see too often.

Ryan is one of my favorite pitchers, btw. I love seeing him hunker over like he is uncomfortable being quiet that big. He seems almost apologetic. Then, he whips the ball and no one can see where it either came from or is going. Fun stuff.

I thought this thread was going to be about Russ Ortiz. I wanted to hear about his latest near-heart-attacking inducing performance.

IIRC it was mid-June last year where he changed his batting stance to squat a little more. Since then, he's been hitting lefties MUCH better. I believe Eric Van had a split on SoSH that showed this.

In Minnesota Ortiz would almost always have one huge month a season. The rest of the year he was nothing special. That and he was hurt a lot.

Eric Van has a split to show just about anything.

(edit) L_R: did you ever read his study on Veritek and sleeping disorders? Wow. Anyway, I read a post somewhere last year that Eric Van was the love child of Bill James and Oliver Stone. That about sums it up perfectly

Yep... he also showed how much Millar improved after he opened up his stance last year.

I'm a SoSH member (LJ gave me membership after I met him at the trophy bash in February) but I don't have the goddamn passwords to the Members Only part. I've been trying to get in contact with LJ but it's a huge pain in the ass.

More importantly I want the pw to the ticket swap forums. Makes things soooo much easier to get tickets.

Can he do it again tonight? Well it isn't the 9th but he has a chance for a big hit.
