Really poor news story
I know that the news and play-by-play aren't the best. However, this one, a Pitcher of the Month news story, confused the hell out of me for a good long while.
<b>"The best month of April in the American League certainly had New York's right-hander Russell King, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award."</b> I assume this news story called "B" when it should have called "A" and vice versa, with B being "the best month of April in the American League" and A being "New York's right-hander Russell King"? Thought I should point out this one, just because it is such a big error compared to the others. |

"I yesterday for some eggs and milk to the store went."
When I was studying German, my classmates and I would sometimes talk like this, because it is basically English words arranged according to German grammar. I've seen a few instances of this in the game. Since Markus doesn't have a team of translators doing the text for OOTP, I just smile and move on. But you are right. That one is pretty cryptic. This topic makes we wonder if Markus wrote a version of OOTP in German. That would be a fun way to brush up on my German skills. |

Hi,
I´m from Germany. I can tell you one thing. A Baseball-Sim in german would make absolutley NO sense. And you would not learn anything, either. ![]() Over here, when guys are talking baseball, english and german get mixed up. German grammar and english words. Because there are no -or very "strange"- Translations for some Terms, everybody uses the english terms. Even though there are common translations for some terms, they are not used: From "Safe" (german: Sicher) to "Out" (Aus). An Error remains an "Error" (Fehler) and a Hit is a "Hit" (Treffer). And then there are some Terms you can´t translate or do not want to be translated, because they would sound funny to a german. "Shortstop" ist the most popular example over here. The translation would be: "Kurzstopper". The translation would be correct. But "Kurzstopper" is just a combination of the translations "short" and "stop". It just does not make any sense to a german. To make that a little easier to understand for you guys: "Leichtathletik" is known as "Track and Field" in the U.S. But: The translation for "Leichtathletik" would be "Lightathletic" Anybody heard of "Lightathletic"? So you better hope, a german version of ootp does not exist. ![]() Anyway: Check out the page of the first ever german ootp-league (link shown in my signature). You can refresh your german by reading our news and stories. Doing that you will also realize how many english terms are used even though the official language of the league is german.

It's been a while but...
"Ein mutter ist ein flasche" Badly spelled (our German friend can probably point out the hideous spelling) but it translates to "my mother is a bottle" which, given my mother is an abusive alcoholic, is strangely ironic. Not bad from three years at school. That's about all I remember. Oh, that, and I can count in German. It was fun to translate the floor numbers in "Die Hard" for people when the bad guys say them in German

I heard that was the case... but it was a cross-dressed comedian that said it. If you have not seen Eddie Izzard, Dressed to Kill.... check it out. HBO comedy series.
Ich bin ein Berliner Ich bin ein Hamburger Ich bin ein Frankfurter something like that....

No, he called himself a potato, not a doughnut.
![]() He was trying to call himself a person from Berlin, though. EDIT: Potato(es) is kartoffeln, but Berliner is a type of potato, if I remember right, my high school teacher had a poster with them on it. |

Whatever the case, I knew it was attributed to Kennedy, which is funny, given I'm not American

I do believe a Berliner is a type of pastry. That's what my prof. told me when I was studying in Germany. Kennedy used the wrong article, which changed the gender of the word, making him a doughnut, not a Berliner.
Edit- OK, I might be a little off. Last edited by JML; 10-20-2002 at 06:45 PM. |

A little fun with language ...
The European Union Commissioners have announced that an agreement has been reached to adopt English as the preferred language for European communities, rather than German which was the other possibility. As part of the negotiations, Her Majesty's government conceded that English spelling has room for improvement and accepted a 5 year phased plan for what will be known as EuroEnglish (Euro for short).
In the first year, "s" will be used instead of the soft "c". Sertainly, sivil servants will reseive this news with joy. Also, the hard "c" will be replased with "k". Not only will this klear up konfusion, but typewriters kan have one less letter. There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced by "f". That will make words like "fotograf" 20% shorter. In the third year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. Governments will enkorage the removal of double letters, which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the horible mes of silent "e" in the languag is disgrasful and they should go. By the fourth year, peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th" by "z" and "w" by "v". During ze fifz year, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords kontaining "ou", and similar changes vud of kors be aplid to ozer kombinations of leters. After zis fifz yer, vil hav a reli sensibl riten styl. Zer vil be no mor trubls or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi tu understand ech ozer. Ze drem vil finali kum tru. |
