I've been a NASCAR fan for about 7 years now, and my favorite drivers have been the Earnhardts. I got even more interested when FOX took over some of the coverage. Darrell Waltrip and Larry McReynolds do an awesome job of telling you what's going on. Wish I could say the same for BP and Dallenbach...

Yes, BP isn't very good. I like Bestwick though.

As long as it's not because of NASCAR...

I like the 24-hour races though, since the drivers are directly racing against each other.
Ah. WRC is a series of time trials, yes. The only rally races that I know of which involve cars directly competing is the Michelin Rally Masters series, which is set on tracks with 2 lanes and a barrier separating their cars. The tracks are short and designed to mimic rally stages to a certain extent with blind corners, steep elevation changes, etc. Actually, now that I think of it, the Master Rallye I believe also has head-to-head competition, altho that's more a result of cars catching up to each other since I believe they're still based on circuit times and released at 20 minute or so intervals.

The beauty of WRC tho isn't the head-to-head racing. It's the tracks they race on. The British Rally Championship for instance, which is what Mobil 1 Rally Championship simulates, consists of about 10 stages per rally event, each stage being about 20-30 miles long through incredibly rural terrain. Imagine jumping in a Peugot 206 with racing modifications and plummeting along cliffs and through twisting forest roads that are barely wide enough to fit your car (paths is probably a better term than roads) at speeds in excess of 100mph and you can get some idea of why it's so thrilling. One second you're skittering along betwen cliff faces, the next second you're in a farmer's field with a wooden fence poking through your windshield. They race in all weather on all surfaces, tarmac, mud, gravel, sand, etc. Good good stuff.

Speaking of thrills and rally, check out the Pikes Peak hillclimb next time Speed Channel broadcasts it (forget what time of year it's held). Cars doing 80-100mph up a steep incline with a hill on one side and a steep cliff on the other side. Sliding wide normally results in critical injury or death as there's a several hundred foot plummet awaiting anyone who makes a mistake. Those guys have the biggest balls of any racers I can personally think of.

I know what you mean; I've seen these on Speed Channel a few times. It's even more difficult when the guy next to you (navigator) is yelling out directions at you so you know where to go!!! I like watching rally racing, but MotoGP is still my personal favorite.

MotoGP is on Sunday mornings and Tuesday nights on Speed (for 3 hours) if anyone's interested

I know what you mean. Ward Burton cracks me up every time I hear him talk. Ward is one of my favorite drivers but, as I mentioned before, Jeff Burton is my favorite.

Personally, I can't stand Jeff Gordon. Whine whine whine!

Ward Burton amazes me. He seems like one of the more intelligent drivers on the circuit, and he does a good job with 2nd-tier type equipment, but the way he talks does no justice to what is coming out of his mouth. I almost feel bad for him when he's being interviewed, because he seems like a nice, levelheaded guy too.

It's tough being the best. Ask Bonds or Schumacher.
