NMBL Has One Opening

The New Millennium Baseball League is in need of an owner under what I consider to be circumstances that are a little bizarre.

We're just starting out. We were about to start our initial draft which I decided we'd do by list, 3 rounds per night for a few nights. This one owner complained about that and said he had considered quitting because I decided to do the draft by lists.

Anyways, he turns in his list for the first 3 rounds, which took place Sunday afternoon. The 3rd player on his list was a 38-year old third baseman. This 38-year old is no slouch, he has top notch ratings across the board and should be a top player in the league. Anyway, the owner got this 38-year old third baseman in the second round. Apparently, this wasn't good and he quit over it, claiming he meant to remove that player from his list and he never wanted him to begin with. Whatever.

I turned to the first guy on the waiting list. He doesn't want a 38-year old player on his team period and he passed. The second guy on the waiting list turned down the team because we had already drafted 3 rounds and he wanted to take a team from scratch.

So, I have an opening for the team currently known as Minnesota. New owner will be able to rename the team and redo the stadium as if it was never owned by anyone else.

We are going to conduct rounds 4 thru 6 of our initial draft on Tuesday night...by lists. If you find the idea of using draft lists offensive, appalling or sacreligious, you may not want to apply.

You have a 38-year old third baseman on your team. If you feel the idea of having a 38-year old player on your team is offensive, appalling and/or sacreligious, you may not want to apply.

If you just want to have a team in a league that's just getting off the ground that has a bunch of owners who are fun and willing to participate, then drop me an e-mail.

In my defense, I was under the understanding that the draft would be live when I joined and only found out a week or so later it would be draft lists. I came to him with concerns immediately but said I would make a list. Now with a fictional draft, it's harder to make a list and I tried to pull out all 34+ year olds as it's hard to start fresh with a declining player in the first few rounds. I missed one apparantly and got him with my 2nd pick. To me that was enough for me to quit as I wasn't very interested in a list draft in the first place. I've been in many leagues in the past 5-6 years and I try to pride myself on sticking it out and it was probably better I quit as soon as I heard the news of a draft list but tried to stick it out regardless of my feelings. As I can see it's a great league if you're into fiction and drafting. My post in no way suggests not joining, but you just have to be more perceptive than I was. Good luck, Brad.

No one outside of the other league members knows the identity of the person who quit and the circumstances of his departure. There was no reason for him to defend himself in a public forum. I did not name names or run his reputation into the ground at any time. I just told the story because apparently this 38-year old player and the facts that it is a list draft and that we are already 3 rounds into it are having a profound effect on people. I wanted to make everyone fully aware before they even thought about taking the team over what they were getting into and why it had come to this point.

As for his understanding that the draft would be live, nothing had been decided concerning the draft when he joined and I did not tell him that the draft would be live. At most, I mentioned it as an option, but nothing definite had been decided until I made the decision to do lists for many reasons. I don't recall him bringing the subject up until I asked for everyone's opinion on how they wanted to do the initial draft and he didn't make his feelings and his possible departure clear until after my decision was made. At no time did I say to anyone in the league that YES, WE WILL DRAFT LIVE (my emphasis). He was the only one with "concerns" about a list draft. If anyone else had a problem with it they have kept it to themselves.

No but a safe assumption is live or message compared to emailing lists of 200 players to the commish every other day which I wasn't interested in. The commish should never have that big of an advantage in being able to hand pick the best available because he doesn't have to make a list

He screwed his own list up and then quit when he decided it screwed his team up. He assumed that things would be done a certain way. When he questioned my method of drafting, I explained to him why I chose to do it the way I chose. He accuses me of cheating without ever asking to see my list. He had no shortage of opportunity to leave before anything was required of him.

Just for the record, we're only doing 3 rounds at a time which would mean a maximum list length of 48 players (16 teams x 3 rounds). One owner sent a list with only 9 players on it, one with only 7 on it. Owners could also elect to have the computer pick for them. 5 owners made that choice. If he's that unwilling to make a short list every other day, so be it, but he had other options.

As I said before, I never publicly called him out. I never mentioned his name or contact information, nor does any of that information appear on the league website. No one outside the league was ever informed by me that that particular person quit. Did I think his excuse for leaving to be a little petty since it was his own mistake that caused it? Yes. However, once he left the league, he was of no concern for me. I told the story in the original post because everyone who I've contacted regarding this team, including the owner in question, does not want because it's a list draft and there is a 38-year old player on the team. I'd rather everyone know what they'd be getting into before they even thought about looking at the team.

The bad part is now that this string has become a repository for one owner's guilty conscience or whatever his reasoning for his posts, no one will realize that the team is still open and just read for this soap opera stuff.
