game won't load

All of a sudden, when I go to load my league, the game crashes. Everytime I try it shows the loading bar fill up real quick, and then the game crashes. I was using updated 2002 post-trading deadline rosters, and about to start into the playoff of my league.

Stupidly, I did not have a backup on this league. I was planning on backing it up after the playoffs were done with, but that plan backfired on me. It was my first year, so I can just start over, but I put a lot of work into it and had written up pretty in-depth dynasty reports about my league. Is there any hope that I can get this league to work again? I can load other leagues I have, it's only this one that crashes the game.

If there's nothing I can do, I guess this just teaches me the lesson to back up ALL my leagues. Ugh.

Have you deleted any of the subfolders within that league folder recently? Do you have all the .dat files. If one of these are missing then the game can run into these issues. If its just one of the subfolders then just creating a new one with the same name will save the league. If its a .dat file it becomes a bit more complex but in some cases is do able with minimal loss of data (note some .dat files are absolutely necessary and if one of these is missing then you would have to start over).

You can check for the missing files by comparing the contents of your league folder with the contents of another league folder. If the league was the same size and had been running for about the same amount of time then the files would also be about the same size.

If the above is not the case then..

It sounds like something went wrong when this league was trying to save. Did you have any crashes with the effected league? Did you have to Ctrl+Alt+Del out from the game?

Things like that can sometimes cause these problems. To my knowledge without a backup there isn't a way to save it after this problem has occurred.

I compared the league folders to another working league and everything seemed to be there. The only difference between the two leagues was that in the one that crashed, I was using player photos, but not in the working one. I tried starting up the league after removing the photos in the photos folder, but this only made the error report come up sooner when the game crashes.

I have had to Ctrl+Alt+Del a few times in the last week or so I've noticed. It had happened before but didn't seem to have any effects. It was probably about the 3rd or 4th time I had to use the task manager that it the league wouldn't load.

What, if anything happened since the last time that it worked correctly?

I think I'm remembering this right ... I was about to start into my postseason, and on the schedule menu I clicked on complete day to get to the first day of the playoffs. The cursor turned into a hourglass icon or whatever you call it, and then nothing happened. The game wouldn't respond. So I hit Ctrl + Alt + Del and ended the program (I had the game saved already so I wouldn't have lost anything). When I tried to load the league after restarting, that's when the game would crash.

The league could be corrupt, that is a common result of a forced game crash (Ctrl + Alt + Del) and the symptoms you describe fit that diagnosis. It is strongly advised that you always allow the game plenty of time to complete it's tasks and use "Ctrl + Alt + Del" to force the program to stop only as a last resort. The fact you saved the game already probably does not matter in this case since the game constantly overwrites the league that is currently open. If by "I had the game saved already" you mean you backed up the league, either with the game backup option or within Windows Explorer (using WinZip or another compression program) then I'd suggest using this backup. I suspect you mean the "save league" option in OOTP though, and that won't be helpful if the league has become corrupt. If your league has become corrupt and will not open at all then I'm not sure there is much you can do about it.
