I submit that Mariano Rivera has solidified his place in the Hall of Fame by turning Tanyon Sturtze into Ultra-Sturtze (which also makes Mariano Rivera the best pitching coach the Yankees have).

Watching Sturtze pitch now is a legitimate joy. And, really, there aren't many better baseball names than Tanyon Sturtze.

9th win in a row, that's good. Bernie hit a grand slam, that's good. Bernie will likely be playing more because of that, that's not. Wang impressed, Cano kept himself going. Which gets me thinking, when's the last time the Yanks had two players you could look at and think "hmm, they could be putting themselves into Rookie of the Year contention?"

Womack plays LF though, after the big shake-up. His VORP just HAS to be negative now.

Yeah, but that's all BP has at the moment.

Newsflash, Joe Torre: Bubba Crosby is RIGHT THERE. We know he can play the outfield. He projects to hit better than Revelation 8:13. You've got four regulars under 30 (Wang, Pavano, A-Rod, and Cano), why not make it five?

Five-hit complete game shutout from Pavano (though he needed 135 pitches), Giambi goes 3 for 3 with a home run, Yanks win 6-0. Tenth in a row, first ten-game streak since mid-1998. Very nice all around.

I had a feeling when Sheffield didn't make it to 3rd on that base hit, the Yanks wouldn't score. My worst nightmare came true when Giambi stepped to the plate with 2 outs. Ah well. It was a great run that got them over .500. Now, hopefully, they'll be able to get things re-started vs the Mets this weekend.

I had that exact same feeling, too. My fiancee and I were up watching the game and once I saw it was bases loaded and Giambi up, I turned off the TV and started to head up to bed. She asked me why I did that. I told her "Giambi's gonna do one of two things: either (a) hit a grand slam like he did in the 14th inning against Minnesota in 2002, or (b) he's gonna strike out and end the game. And with the way he's been hitting, there's no way in hell he's hitting a grand slam, so I'm going with the strike out." She turned the TV back on just in time to see strike three, then promptly turned the TV back off and followed me to bed.

Can't complain about 10 in a row before that, though... time to start another 10-game winning streak.

Well, the Yankees defense is still awful. Cano is just brutal at second and while Matsui is a better center fielder than Williams is at this point, he ain't all that either. Womack is a waste of a roster spot, let alone a starting position.

The pitching staff is still very dicey especially with Randy Johnson looking like he's going to be nothing better than a 4.00 ERA type pitcher this season. The awful defense doesn't help, but his velocity is still in Arizona and even his command looks to have deserted him.

Despite that, I'm ready to concede that they are going to make yet another run this season. I still maintain that they are on the verge of collapse, but it will probably take one more year to get there. At some point the Yankees have to realize that you can't neglect the farm system, your bench and your defense entirely and win, no matter how high your payroll is.

If he qualified, he would be 3rd in range factor, 1st in ZR, and 14th in fielding %. Just rough fielding statistics, but there isn't anything to suggest he's "brutal."

EDIT: Among second basemen, that is.

Key words being "if he qualified". His rate stats in the minors were pretty bad and scouts concur. Granted, I haven't watched him play much and it is too early to rate him based on his major league stats so he could maybe be ok. The evidence I've seen makes him seem more than a bit dubious.

His knock in the minors was his range and his batting eye. Sickles has a great write up on his defense in his book, and BA used to write about it, too.

I was just looking at him last night and I seem to recall that he was basically around average every year. You may have access to it ATM so I'll take your word for it. Josh is right, however, the scouts are pretty much in agreement that he has range problems. Scouts have been wrong, of course.
