Player Talent/Rating Comparison
OK, You know you just have OOTP on the mind just a little too much when you have an idea in your dream that wakes you up because you can't wait to put it on paper and make it a reality.
Well, in my online league, the APBL (www.actionpackedbaseballleague.com) I have come up with this brilliant idea to use Excel to build a spreadsheet to compare players (Either by rookie or position) and rate them... My idea is to use it to help the league learn new players. My first question, does anyone have anything like this already? If they do, I would much rather use theirs before putting all the work into it. If not: My idea is to come up with a point system, say 1-10 and judge all players on it and depending on their Talents, Ratings and a few other minor issues. The help I am looking for is to determine how much you think each Rating/Talent deserve. Here are the talents I would like to use starting w/offensive players and my idea for how many points I think each should be worth: Contact Talent-1 pt Gap Talent-.5 pt Home Run Talent-1 pt Eye Talent-.5 pt Avoid K's Talent-.5 pt Contact Rating - 1 pt Power Rating - 1 pt Gap Rating .5 Pt Eye Rating - .5 pt Avoiding K's - .5 pt Running Speed - .5 Stealing Ability - .25 Running Instincts -.25 Sac Bunt - .5 Bunt for a hit - .5 Primary Position Range - .5 Primary Position Arm - .5

I know IatricSB has mentioned having something that sounds similar that is used for evaluating rookies. There was a thread maybe a couple weeks back asking if there would be interest in making it available.
http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...ad.php?t=97327 Oops. Just checked that and it turns out it was a VB program and not strictly a spreadsheet. I'd guess quite a few people have done this sort of thing for themselves over time. But it looks like you have done most of the work, deciding on at least initial weights for ratings. You could take exporter or game CSV output, slap it into your spreadsheet with the rating weights atop columns and a last column adding up all the weighted factors. Plus it might be easier to tweak your own ratings depending on your own scale and add other factors. |

Yeah, I actually saw her post back then. I would love to see it released.

There were a few skill ratings that really stood out at me, so I'd rate them weighted approximately as follows off the top of my head:
Contact Rating - 1.5 Power Rating - 1.3 Gap Rating .5 Eye Rating - .75 Avoiding K's - .1 Primary def range - 1.1 |

I do this exact thing, and use the following weights:
Contact - 8 Power - 9 Gap - 5 Eye - 8 Avoid K's - 3 Stuff - 10 Movement - 8 Control - 8 Weighing speed, defense and endurance tends to throw the whole thing off because they are so position-specific. I tend to just take a look at those once I've narrowed the field down to the top candidates based on the above numbers. |
