I only follow two sports religiously but..

BASEBALL: The Cubs, because I started following them as a joke because I loved the Harry Carry skits on SNL so much, and I just sort of started to love them.

FOOTBALL: The Niners for two reasons, A. There closest to home. B. when i was 6 and they won their last super bowl after an unstoppable 80's I thought I'd jump on the band wagon. In retrospect this was a poor decision.

I've been a Mets fan since I was 7. My dad took me to both NY stadiums when I had the chicken pox and it really could have gone either way. Might have been a bit easier on me if I had picked the Yankees (I usually root for the underdog, which the Yankees were in the late 80s)

BUT, in 1986, Game 6 (of course) was the first game that my dad let me stay up really late to watch. So I'm up late at night, watching the Mets losing, and so I decide to pray. Hernandez hits that fly ball deep that's out #2, and I'm still watching with my hands folded and trying not to blink. I stay in that position (I think my legs and arms were slightly cramped) until Mr. Wilson's ball goes through the legs of Mr. Buckner legs and I go to bed deliriously happy, thinking that all was right in the world. I hope everyone has had one night like that in their life (The deliriously happy part at least).

How can I not be a fan? That one night has made up for all the suffering in rooting for the Mets since. And just when I think I'm completely fed up with them, I find something new (Like more clips of Stengel's Mets, or the '69 Mets) to keep me entertained.

I don't care much for other sports, but I'll root for whoever my friend is rooting for, unless the Dodgers, Yankees or Giants are playing (in that order), because of Brooklyn and Koufax, Stengel and NYC, and Willie, in that order.
