Dave Kingman eat your heart out

This player just retired in one of my solo leagues and I thought I would share.
I was going to do a HOF or not thread but he had a longer carrer than I thought he would.

He has drafted at 19 in the 10th round, 288th overall pick. He was in the minors for six years before lots of hardwork and many many many talent bumps propelled him to the lineup. A right handed second basemen, he was 6'0 190 lbs.
He was god awful second basemen, no range and .965 fielding%
Never much of a contact hitter and he was just awful at getting on base.
But good freaking lord, he hit the ball hard every single time that he made contact.
60% of his hits were extra bases. I am going to assume that is the largest margain in history.
He had more strikeouts than hits, and more homeruns than walks.
He won 4 MVPs, only one of which he deserved. He won them in 2031, 2032, 2039, 2040.
He is 8th alltime in homeruns, 16th in doubles, 25th in RBI.
Hold the NL record for HR and RBI in a season

That's some prolific power ... and he definitely earned the '39 MVP. He reminds me of a comment I once made about Albert Belle back in his heyday: if he ever hits a single, it was by accident.

I care! It's neat to see unique players like him. It's also kind of fun to think about how you'd use a guy like that or if you'd try to trade him. I think he'd be a great 5-6 hitter, behind a couple of good all-around hitters who get on base. He's gonna hit a lot of homers and doubles and he won't GIDP much because he's either striking out or getting a hit. I wonder what his career BABIP is?

He is just a weird player all around. Most years he was not even in the top 25 RC/27
But he was a second basemen.
Where else are you going to find that sort of production from a second basemen?

That 2039 season jumps out at you, a totally anomalous spike into Albert Pujols territory: high average, loads o' power--followed by a more believable .301 and then a return to mediocre BAs. If it werent for guys like Norm Cash I'd say no way, dude, but it is juuuussst possible that such a season could poke its little head into the decidedly more modest fabric of this guys career. Fun stuff, in any case.

Not entirely. Granted, his batting average jumped off the map from '38 to '39, but the next few seasons after that he hit close to .300 as well. He must have learned to hit for average late in his career. Now that is pretty unrealistic

The 37 season is pretty cool too. This guy is a riddle wrapped in an enigma in an anomaly.

Kingman hit for a significantly lower average than this guy, IIRC, but he walked more. I think Kingman managed an OBP over .300 despite a batting average in the .230s for his career.

OOTP used to generate too many guys that were similar to this. Now, thankfully, they are less common, but they still come up from time to time, making them much more interesting.

Unlike Kingman, this guy hit a lot of doubles.

This player is unlike anyone who's ever played the game in MLB. Rob Deer walked a ton, more than Kingman, and didn't hit many doubles. What's really weird is having that many homers to go with that many doubles, then to have a batting average so low. Almost like what Kingman or Deer would have done in the original Ebbets Field.

That could be a likely explanation for this guy's performance, if he hadn't had similar doubles totals for five different teams. That makes his statistics unrealistic. He obviously has little or no speed, since he can't steal bases, hit triples or apparently get any infield singles. That means that he kept hitting the ball over outfielders' heads and was able to lumber in for a double. Opposing managers would simply set their outfielders back near the warning track and turn many of those doubles into outs. Hits that fell in would result in singles.

One thing I brought up is that, by my observation (admittedly not tested statistically, so open to being disproven), power hitters tend to draw a lot of walks. It's not always true, but it most cases it is. In OOTP, that connection is not there. OOTP seems to crank out guys who hit a lot of homers but don't walk much.

I would agree. I'm sure there's not a 100% correlation (Wade Boggs, Rickey Henderson both walked a ton), but I would think power hitters get pitched around more often, thus draw more walks.

Just checking the walks leaders among active players:

Bonds, F. Thomas, Bagwell, Palmeiro, Olerud, Thome, Sheffield, Ventura, Biggio, Griffey, Bernie Williams, Todd Zeile, Tim Salmon, Chip Jones, Luis Gonzalez, Mark McLemore, Man-Ram, Larry Walker, Jason Giambi, Julio Franco. That's the top 20. So there's a strong tendency there, but not 100% correlation (Mark McLemore???).
